everything can’t be done overnight" T Changing mind-scan stop violence -- fV '- NOVEMBERJ ) 1993J N - Regents discuss future of Utah colleges by Elisha Ray requesting a Gardner Hall renovation as the number one Building Boards decision Nov 19 If the student union building plan is approved the college will request tire 1994 legislature to allocate funds for the architectural design of the building Assuming that monies will be given the tentative schedule will be to request funds for construction in 1995 with the completion of the building set for the 96-9- 7 school year An estimated $76 million will be needed for the new student center to be built CEU will request $38 million funding from the legislature The remaining $38 million will come from college fund raising There had been a approach proposed by the college to raise the funding needed This plan consists of an increase in student fees in 1996 private donations and possibly money coming from both the city and county with the idea that the student center could also be used as a convention and meeting place for the community Fund raising has already started to take place on the part of CEU "An escrow account was started four years ago" continued Petersen "this money was a priority The public will be informed of the Regents and the State portion of the previous year’s student fees" CEU also announced its Capital Campaign on dltor In chief A new student center for the Cbllege of Eastern Utah the creation of a criterion to determine when two-yecolleges are four-yefor status and a eligible new two-yecollege facility in Davis County were all discussed at the Board of Regents meeting held in Orem on Friday Nov S State officials and CEU agree the college is long overdue for a new student center The current student center on the CEU campus is allowed to hold a maximum of 500 students and with the increase in enrollment each year the building has passed the brink of being obsolete Not only is the student center incapable of holding the increasing student body but it docs not meet state safety codes With this in mind President Michael Petersen proposed a plan to the Board of Regents for a new student union building "On the Board of Regents priority list CEU appears to have ended up second to the University of Utah which is very encouraging" remarked President Petersen The U of U is ar ar ar & three-prong- ed Entertainment Page"3 its 55th anniversary in early October In other action Friday President Robert Huddleston of Dixie College proposed to establish a criterion that when met a feasibility study on Dixie going to four-yestatus would be conducted College enrolls 4j000 full time students and the population of Washington County reaches 100000 The Board rejected Huddleston’s proposal and reaffirmed Dixie’s two year college mission The board’s affirmation extended to include the commitment to the strategic-plannin- higher-educati- on ar ar 'Sweet as a i g process "Planning processes currently under way will specify the role and mission of Dixie College and other institutions in the system through the year 2010" the regents' resolution states Petersen indicated that the board feels that it is much more logical and less expensive for the two-yecolleges to offer university centers where student's can take televised courses from the surrounding four-yeschools such as Weber State University and Utah State (set Regents page 8) CEU Basketball: Page 6 ar Under the proposal the study would be dcxre when Dixie Sports CEU expanding music field i THURSDAY Tentatlva design tor future atudent center Arts et 8450 vV materials They have to estimate the quantity of materials that will go into each part of the phase as it is constructed he said Viewpoint Page 2 RICE UT Resell Ellis' |
