Show wwh A - I! poetic visit from Christmas forgotten by Brad Gwyther editorial writer Twas the day after Thanksgiving and all through the land All were preparing to spend all cash at hand Sum owners awaited with earnest faces at their door In hopes that customers would come in millions or more Families were cutting out coupons from bargain magazines While visions appeared of finding the best bargains one has ever seen Fighting through the crowds I was like the rest Searching for the items that were the cheapest and the best When out the doors of a popular store I had left Only to sec two old men alone playing chess Yet they were not the only ones in the park There were many others suffering in the cold and the dark Who were these people who cluttered up the streets Those people who look like they don't keep themselves "neat11 When finally it struck me that these were the poor The homeless that had nothing more than the clothes on their back Many begging with cups for change just for a mcasley snack The hustle and bustle continued at pace While I couldn't forget the looks on their faces What could they be thinking I asked myself As they saw thousands taking food home to the shelf They witnessed people who were taking home toys-Tmake happy all those waiting girls and boys Home to whore it was warm and they would rest their heads Not in a box but rather in a big soft bed My heart grew heavy and my throat got a knot Were these the people that society had forgot Or did they just push them aside hoping they'd disappear When their numbers grow larger year after year These arc the unforunatc and the forgotten The ones who's spirit and souls have been broken Organizations were made to handle the holidays Personally society made these to feel OK Making the guilt go away because someone else is doing it And this is the kind of attitude that doesnT mean sh-- t This is a responsibility to be handled by all Not by a mcasley handful that come to the call We all need to pitch in to help meet the needs of our fellow man Wouldn't you like it that way if you were collecting change in a can Who dares to say there is no Santa to bring us good cheer Something that seems to bring us together only once a year People are all to busy with their money to think of others Thinking a few coins in a can will help our sisters and brothers Everyone rich and poor young and old need to offer their hands To hi everyone know that we all can be friends Stop worrying about your bankbooks and accounts It's helping your fellow man that really counts Christmas spirit should be shared by all to one another And not for one day but all year to help your fellow brother If only we would care more and live together arm in arm It would be harder for those we care for to Call into harm I was tonight out of my trance by a loud car horn and a shout Is this what we have let Christmas be all about Is it all about presents or maybe TV shows The true meaning it seems nobody knows These are the people who pray just to survive the night As society's greed for the material seems to turn off their light A mere ray of hope is all that remains And for us to increase it will cause us no pain So help your fellow man in your own possible way And maybe then we all can have a Merry Christmas Day hursdayIPecembeL61iV9UJ Don’t blow your smokestack by Wendy Mattingly staff writer Many students that smoke arc beginning to feel cheated as the College of Eastern Utah senate debates over what areas the smokers will be entitled to Currently the lounge located near the Geary Theater will be left for the smokers to use until a replacement can be established At that time the smokers will have to use the areas in the cafeteria career center and an area to be located in the new Computer Building It is not against the law to smoke as long as it is in designated area that arc properly ventilated As it is now the lounge docs not fit these requirements therefore the proposal to eliminate smoking in the lounge is not an attack against the smokers freedom The change is an attempt to improve the college standards so they meet the guidelines set forth in the Clean Air Act appreciate the (continued box filled with slap admirable Some may say that bracelets sat on the counter at a this is not logical True this may local convenience store with a not be right for everyone but her sign above them that read “You attitude toward that value of that play with them you buy them” education is one everyone of us We each play with them for the should strive for same reason that when someone We come to college to learn to secs a fairly good size clod of think To sort out what we really snow in the road we naturally believe and why from all that we iL This reason is “just step on have been taught as fact We because it's there” No other reashould all examine our purposes is for this son necessary for An education should be sought getting an education Sure do need a degree for many of same you after for the cially principle just the jobs in today's world but we because the education is there to Extrinsically education is to can earn our degree as we get the learn This may seem like an ilget a job and to deal with others Intrinsically education makes one education for its intrinsic value to logical reason but once we raus as being learning and thought a better individual because they tionalize this it makes sense think and rationally make their not a piece of paper that says we can Publilius Synts one said “It is can now go into the world and be own decisions They can underonly the ignorant who despise edtrained through experience stand the world around them and ucation” College is important for this Throughout every individual's function within it cm their own have more much to is It been very fact Good grades may reflect education process facts have important how well one does in class comintelligence than anything materiimpounded into our impressionpeting with everyone else but edable minds This was the case in alistic because it is something that cannot be taken away from an ucation is more for the individual elementary and high individual It is a part of that inQuality not quantity is what is schooL important Strive for good grades As college students it is now dividual intelligence is what but get them for an intrinsic our responsibility to learn to think makes diem a human being and worth value of The of value rather than to show off something for ourselves We must leam to Get a education for yourself not is priceless question everything from our own intelligence to prove you know more than anKaren is McGee an imto example beliefs (many of which were other A thought says “Don’t let all of us She has a goal to qual pressed upon us in high school) to by Ryan Frazier pre-scho- ol what others try and lead us to believe We must in obligation to ourselves as an individual find the truth for ourselves We are our own greatest teachers As Socrates said “The unexamined life is not worth living ” We must also question why we are striving for a college education Are we here toga a degree or an education? Many are hoe for the former We should be here to better ourselves in the areas growing mentally physically emotionally spiritually and so- your schooling get in the way of your education” Bel Kaufman once said during a television interview “Education is not a product mark diploma job moncy-i- n that order it is a g one” process a College is only the first stepping stone across the river but it is headed in the right direction One must continue to cross no matter how rapid or terrible the journey may become Robert Gohccn said “If you feel that you have both feet never-endin- planted on level ground then the university has faded you” We must not deceive ourselves that we are educated once we leave college for college is here for the purpose of assisting us in realizing the spectrom of education exceeds the boundaries of what we have really learned at college If you leam nothing else at college leam that you have much more to leam and it comes with thinking for ourselves and endlessly searching for answers to our questions Editor' Newt Editor Sports Editor Editorial Editor Stophunto Bogdhl Plfhard Nielsen Pima Carver PhotographeraShanc EUason Gordon Jensca & Harlan Mows Ryan Frazier Feliciano Gonzales Melissa ReportersGrogan Brad Gwyther William Thomas Houghton Kristen KohimderWendyMattingy Samuel Pittman Paige Petersen Gregg Prettyman and Andrew Waters —- Graphic drdp— r Business manager Advisor Uw fGBli a Sw Pam Dupln Wendy Mattingly Susan A Pokier - adM pufaieoHan of Vw CMUga of COdwn Uofi and fc mwyoffMf IbCkMw Sunday and QpMani quarto giMtf M prtfcoftm may or tmf not mtkef Me offletaf opHbn at CfW admhUahon tooUVifudwfftaff ftwCaofcofflcefetocatedtoAum III offtw Mato offletaf ipty |
