at the Helper Ball Park May 22-2- 3 Lady Eagles place third in region tournament by Richard Hickmon women's sports co-edit- or The Lady Eagles showed a great deal of heart and spirit going into the region tournament Their only defeats came from a couple of lough forfeits to Snow College The ladies were on fire coming into the playoffs winning six games in a row but that was to be taken away by a first round forfeit to Snow College An Eagle player failed to make the game on time because she stayed at school to ' take a test The second game in line for the ladies was against Colorado Northwestern Community College where they took no prisoners beating them 11-- 3 Showing that they had a lot of fight left in them they came back strong against Colorado Northwestern in the next game knocking them off 11-- 2 come away with third place in the tournament The Eagles forfeited the game because Jerri Anderson was unable to play in the final game because of a broken jaw which she suffered in a practice game a week before the tournament The decision to forfeit the last game was the teams coach Guy Beach said "We look a vote on it and all the team decided Jerri's health was more important than the game" The reason this was even a problem is because the Lady Eagles team consisted of only nine players Coach Beach said he felt bod for the ladies because they played so hard to get to the semi-finaonly to be denied to play any further because of injury He also felt if they would have had ten players they would have won it ls all Beach in his first year as CEU's women's softball coach 1 guided the team to a 1 conference record and third place in region while finishing 1- After two great performances against the Colorado team the ladies were forced to forfeit their next game against Snow in the semi-fina- ls and -1 overall The team also finished in third place in the region tournament 13-1- 5 Hie Lady Eagles were led by players Haylcy Briggs who hit 356 and Tina Sperry who hit 383 Backing them up with some fine hilling of their own was Slacce Pcnc who hit 405 and Charissc Pincombc who hit 357 Coach Beach also mentioned that Charissc came on very strong towards the end of the season and hit real well Casey Cutler the Eagle's only true pitcher held her own on the mound with all-1- 0 record and was named the number two pitcher in region "I really enjoyed working with the ladies this season they have a lot of heart" coach Beach said He also said that his assistant Terry Rushton did a good job helping him with the team He also mentioned some concern over the fact that they were considering dropping women's softball next year "I feel it's the women's best sport and I really think they should keep the program running It only costs them about $4000 a year" "If the program is around next year Terry will take over the head coaching job and I feel she will do a good job" coach Beach said "The ladies would also like to sec her stay around and coach them next year" Beach said that she is willing to recruit and has good people coming back next year along with some good recruits Beach said hell spend the rest of his time recruiting for basketball now that Rushton will be taking over Former athlete killed another injured in separate accidents by Jake Shewmake mens' sports editor Former College of Eastern Utah student and baseball
