crediblc This should give you a good idea of how rough the pageant will be for all the contestants The competition will begin Wednesday evening with body painting an IQ test and a best dressed category Thursday during the day a photogenic competition and the kissing con-th- e test will be held Thursday night will be the evening wear talent couch potato and swimsuit competi- tions The master of cere-monies will be Mr CEU 1988 Lance Nielson McMillian will be next reader in Reader's Series Don't forget the Sweetheart Ball tomorrow night Friday 17 The dance is being held in the Student Activity Center Ballroom and will begin at 9:00 Cost per couple will be $8 and it should be guys' choice Dress is This year the colors are black and white with a touch of red The theme will be "When I'm With You" A live band will provide the music They are locals and call themselves "Totally Wired" The Sweetheart Ball has been organized by the Activities Committee headed by Tiffany Baker Also on the committee are Rick Jones Kordine Schmidt Shawndra Jensen Angela Verde Brian Hall and Jana Koskcla semi-form- al A "Buried Child" holds serious secrets by Timi Blsquera staff writer College of Eastern Utah theatre department instructor Dian Henderson is very enthusiastic about her upcoming production of Sam Shephard's "Buried Child" set to open March 9 10 and 11 in the Geary Theatre It will be the second CEU production that she has directed following her very successful debut of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Drcamcoal" musical production last December This year is Ms Henderson's first year teaching but she is an experienced actress She has spent a lot of time The College of Eastern Utah's successful 1989 Readers' Scries continues on Tuesday Feb 21 with g novelist and fiction writer Terry the McMillan The reading will begin at 8 pan in CELTs Little Theatre and is free to the public A resident of Laramie Wyo McMillan obtained a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1978 from the University of California Berkley She has also studied sercenwriting at Columbia University in New York traveling with a professional touring group in the Midwest South and East mostly along Texas to North Dakota Recently she had acting work in Mississippi for one summer and also in South Dakota for another summer She is a native of and earned her master's defrom the University of Negree braska Omaha She chose to produce "Buried Child" because it is more of a serious production but still has lots of humor involved It's about the disintegration of families and it shows how keeping secrets from die past within I1 family hurts their love and 0-ma- ha award-winnin- Terry Ball is Her first published work was entitled "The Pint" and wa inclnricd in the Yardhird Reader IV in Berkley Since then her stories articles and reviews have appeared in publications ranging from the New York Times and Esquire Magazine to the Covdog Review in Watsonville California 1 affection It shows how family members are really blinded by the truth and it takes almost a stranger a grandson's girlfriend to be exact to make them realize the truth and from her changes come about The play involves a very serious matter but it has its funny moments It's very lifelike dealing with love pain anger and humor Auditions were held on February 13 and many actors and actresses tried their hardest for only two female and five male character parts The cast of characters includes: Grady McEvoy as McMillan's first novel "Mama" published by Houghton Mifflin Company was released to enthusiastic reviews last year The partly autobiographical novel is a bright and optimistic story of a spirited ghetto mom raising five kids on her own Its overall tone texture and context has been compared to Alice Walker's "The Color Purple” Similar works have earned recognition for McMillan across the country In addition to rccciv- ing the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation McMillan has been a fellow at both the MacDowcll Colony and the Yaddo Artist Colony She currently teaches in the creative writing program at the University of Arizona The reading is sponsored by a cooperative arrangement between CEU and the Literary Program of the Utah Arts Council |
