Show March 6 1981 2-F- rtday OPINIO Too much of a good thing By Karla Edmondson the-weToo much of a gooI thing can be reflected in the Absolutely nothing was planned after attended Dixie home game even though an ASCEU amount of semi-formand formal dances planned ICC organization requested to plan one Instead the by ASCEU organizations would voted no to the proposed dance because it Why does ASCEU organizations continue to take away from the Buddy Dance on Saturday sponsor formal dances when it has become apCarbon High School had a basketball game and parent time after time that the students are not students had nowhere to go after either game attending and the sponsoring organization loses except the usual “drag Main Street” routine money? It is my opinion that more casual Friday and Many CEU students migrate home on weekends but will stay if there’s a good rivalry game and Saturday dances or stomps are needed especially need an activity to bum off their excitement and after a basketball football or other event that ll al many students attend Some of the most successful activities have been casual dances that are also supported by the community and high school students after home athletic events thus generating much needed revenue ASCEU student government projected approximately a $300 income from every formal dance and lately the income has been between $50 to $100 The time and money loss by the school is substantial when one considers the time taken to purchaise and put up decorations select and pay for a live band plus adding the hidden costs of printing publicity tickets and refreshments ASCEU could have sponsored a dance after one of the biggest attended games of the year but chose instead to sponsor a Buddy Dance for less than 20 couples to attend A well deserving “victory" dance over Snow would seem much more appropriate and attended better energy All of the blame cannot be put on student government for we the students deserve part of that blame ASCEU plans dances for the studentbody to enjoy But it seems as if everyone counts on their neighbors to participate and in turn hardly anyone participates Student apathy has become like a foot fungus around this campus — it keeps spreading Continued funds will be lost and student activities will decrease unless the student participation increases If your preference is a casual one then let it be dance rather than a known to the ASCEU officers When there are not any dances people begin to contain of anything to do When there are dances students are not supporting them In the long run no one benefits — not student government nor the students semi-fonn- al Unwind and shoot the bull Freshman Todd Gorishek rides the mechanical bull featured during Western Week By Todd Gorishek The student center is for the student body It is the place to watch a TV program to unwind in the game room and to “shoot the bull” in the snack bar It is in general a place to socialize and meet new faces Does this sound like our student center? The sad fact is that it does not The TV room is dark the game room remains disassembled for long periods of time and the snack bar lacks “the bull” One might ask why our student center is more like a day care center than a spot for student recreation The director of student activities and the student government have done quite a lot of ground work so that ihe student center has the potential of being an active place on campus yet there seems to be a lack of interest Again we ask why and what could possibly be done about it The TV room was intended for those who wanted to come in and watch it A problem exists however in that the TV is rarely on and most of the students do not know how to operate it A possible solution to correct this problem may be to turn it on in the morning and leave it on 1HE E4GLE S54FF EDITOR Reporters Karla Edmondson Shelly Babcock Victor Chapman LIsaGInes JoeMarrolll Dan Burns Todd Gorishek Marks Jones Jackie aBerto Blake Olsen 6colt Wheeler Troy Miller Photographers Copy Advisor Advisor Larry Severeld Susan A Polster throughout the day Eventually those continually passing by might stop in and watch a program Soon it could become the place to sit down and catch one’s breath before his next class After dances are held in the game room it is sometimes several days before the equipment is set up again This is unfortunate because on Friday afternoon the game room could be a place of action but as one passes by it is only a place of apathy The snack bar could be used more frequently by the student body also Incentives are needed for the student body to use what is available Possibly a free hour of games on a Friday afternoon and daily specials offered by the snack bar could attract those walking by to stop r in Forums on the campus seem to be forgotten It is understandable that one might not make time to attend because of “better things to do” but one doesn’t know if a forum is good or bad unless he goes It is here where we might look for teacher participation The large student body turn out for the Sagebrush Rebellion was an obvious result of this There have been other forums also such as Rape and Planned Parenthood which contained good college - type material These forums could have easily been incorporated into sociology and psychology classes and the students in them given the incentive to attend from their professors The problems of maintaining interest in activities will not change today tomorrow or next week however with daily consistency in providing activities and programs the student may develop a feeling of knowing that they are regularly there for him to take advantage instead of him feeling that they were not there yesterday so they probably will not be there today THE EAGLE ' The official student publication of the College of Eastern Utah Prlca Utah The Eagle Is dedicated to give Information and service to the student body It represents The editorial opinions expressed In The Eagle do not' necessarily reflect viewpoints of administration faculty student or staff Specialising In Typing Research Pa purs Best kept secret week and time to start the typical waiting vigil of what ASCEU represen- Auhhhanother tatives have planned for the student community Activities are sponsored almost daily and it seems to be the best kept secret in the school because unless one knows the day hour and second that the activity announcement will be posted then many of the well thought of activities will go unnoticed and unattended by the majority of the studentbody Student government officers are elected in April of each school year and spend part of their summers and during the school year attending workshops and seminars learning how to plan publicize and execute activities However many of the activities are not posted until the day before or even the day of the activity therefore alleviating those students who did not wait for the latest news from ‘ASCEU student government offices Also a lack of organization and follow through on some of the cancelled activities may create a negative image of the whole system The Eagle hopes that next year’s officers will take the good points exhibited by this years officers and learn by their mistakes so that maybe it is not totally an apathetic studentbody but merely an uninformed one oTuition hikes Ceattaaed from Page 1 I Students Alta Accounting and Your Office SvpportCompany are en- couraged to write to thdr Word Procossing 537-465- percent happens then she will think twice about returning next year “If it goes up I hope that financial aid is also increased "she said 1 Carbon for Emery senator and counties is Omar Bunnell 300 East 640 North Price Utah Carbon county state representative is Mike Dmitrich 566 North Dover Circle Utah Emery and County state represenrepresentatives to ex- tative is John Garr l®j press their feelings Denver Avenue East toward the increase Carbon Utah state senators 0 State Price r |
