Show Dear CEU— Friday CEU LmM® ©nd DUCA 233 for Jerry's PBL President in blessings many These vanties blessings we have been able to enjoy in great abundance this year on the CEU campus How can we say this? It’s because we saw things lacking at this school which decided to improve upon which we did and seeing success inspired us to continue our push forward It wasn’t going to be said of the PBL club members that we just sat on the sidelines creating as much noise and choir as possible but yet doing nothing about improving the situation Our club participted in a tremendous success that truly was sacrificed in action That was our Muscular Dance-A-Tho- Dystrophy that we n helped Carbon with or High School’s DEGA club But as usual the majority of the student body failed to support an opportunity to give a little of their precious time Only 20 people out of our great college were able to find time in doing their part to insure the success of the dance but those people were determined that we were going to succeed And succeed we did Tell us of another activity in the history of CEU that $5233 was raised Don’t misun- derstand what has been stated here We are just attemtping to show what a small group of people were able to succeed in Just think what all of us working together could have accomplished $5322 seems to be a pretty small amount now doesn’t it? As we examine this past year we say thank you to our ASCEU officers for the fine work and example that they set for the student body One of our hopes is that our ASCEU president next year will make it a point to better involved and lend more guidance to the affairs of the student body We say thank you to Rodger Sorenson for his patience and cheerfulness that he always exhibited to our club members We make it a point in conclusion to say to all of you who could only gripe about the affairs of CEU and refused to participate that it was not the lack of activities on campus but the abundance of apathy on the part of the student body Thank you CEU for a good year We trust next year will be even better The Dance-A-Tho- n sponsored by CEU’s Phi Beta Lambda Club and Carbon High Schools’ DEGA Club raised $523300 last week for Muscular Distrophy Thirty five couples from Carbon and Emery Counties danced 10 hours to music provided by Magic Castle Disco to raise the money This is only $334 less than Utah State University raised in their “30 hour’’ dance-a-tho- n held in Logan the previous weekend PBL Bob Bronson coordinator for CEU and DECA Jay Pierson coordinator for CHS attributed the huge success to bizarre method of getting “kicks” is taking A the lives of hundreds of college men every year but such deaths are often mistakenly reported as What The Mural Pedro Garda What is 5 feet high 10 feet long and has every famous Mexican except maybe the Frito Bandidto depicted If you’ve strolled through the library lately you've wondered what ge podge of our south of the border buddies means n other unsung heroes of local significance are the Powell Brothers who first settled the area one of them eventually losing his life to a sliver tip grizzly on Nebo Mountain I think there are plenty of others we could bare who contributed to our area Aside from the question If you attended the grand of relevance is the question unveiling the other day and of aesthetic quality of the were able to cut through the mural A poll of art majors strumming guitars here on campus will bring refreshments flattering of art quality speeches and Mexican comparisons the mural of with Gibby flags you would have the rock in front of the learned that no a Mexican school philantropist didn't donate the “Mural” to CEU but Oh well at least this $3000 of Bicentenial Funds footed the bill A life size mural covers the last ill protrait of Lee Trevino fated attempt on the same sinking the winning putt of site Remember black and the Mexican Open would white and abstract all over At least we know Pancho have been as appropriate lives But $3000 will of Mural Villa The relevance the of Eastern Utah’s Bicen- buy a lot of tacos tenial borders on the ridiculous Who cares if Summer Quarter William A Castro was a state Island Rhode Senator? (Hint: little-publiciz- ed It has has nothing to do with drugs) Deadly kicks: A bizzarre method of getting thrills has taken the lives of hundreds of people many of them college students in the past several years But because the activity involves sexual behavior and out of respect for victims and their relatives it is not often discussed publicly The practice is popularly termed “terminal sex” and involves a man hangining himself by the neck with a noose in an attempt to enhance sexual selfgratification He is supposed to release the noose at the last moment before unconsciousness just A slight miscalculation in timing means death After a student at Michigan State U died in this manner late in January the Michigan State News reported research done by Dr Myron Faber of the College of Human Medicine which indicates MSU that there are 200 - 300 such deaths annually including three on the MSU campus in the past three years He says that 80 percent of those who engage in the practice are aged 14 22 Medially the dangerous practice is known as “sexual asphyxia syn- drome” or “eroticized hanging” It appears likely that some such deaths are reported as suicides either out of ignorance of the practice or in an attempt to protect the privacy of the victim whom authorities may mistakenly believe percent liberal 56 percent was committing an isolated perversion middle-of-the-roa- percent conservative and 1 percent far right In itself this doesn't tell us anything really useful but by comparing these figures to those from previous surveys what we’ve been hearing and observing is confirmed today’s In 1969 59 percent of entering freshmen surveyed thought grades should be abolished In 1976 the figure was: 65 51 44 or 21 percent Student-watchin- students are becoming more conservative — or g: The national surveys of student opinions released periodically can be interesting and useful but only with careful study and a constant guard against any tendency to draw stereotypes A survey by itself is not nearly as useful as several surveys taken over a period of time so that trends can be detected For instance the UCLA-Americ- recently released an Council on Education survey of fulltime 1976 freshmen tells us that 22 percent consider themselves far left 256 (Continued from page 1) Pamela Jo Shelly “K” Woodruff Scott Wilson Ray Woodward Kevin Worthen Eric Wuest J Associate in Arts G Secretarial Norma Alger Christensen Paula Kaye Mining Technology-Supervisor- James J Cecilia Associate Degree in Applied Science Accounting Cynthia Ann Grange Mathis Linda Gary Craig Froylan Certificate of COMPLETION Business Cosmetology Nellie Barker Madsen W Garcia Arvel B Hansen A Shaw Ernal John Garcia Jan “T” Myrberg Rosa Pratt y Larsen Ann Rachele Dolores Wells Jean Kathy Wilcox Valene Ann Young Debora Lila B Valerie Bruno Deborah Jill Crouse Tina Eileen Annette Hanson Teresa Louis Munden Oliver Debra Lynn Virginia Su Fivecoat Robinson Pamela Snow Davis Automobile Mechanics Michael C Nelson Lamond Williams Cosmetology Business Mining Technology-Maintenan- ce Management Michael Guzman Lynn Oliver Debra Michael D Lister Joe Clifford Valdeze more accurately less liberal But there are some topics on which students continue to move toward what could be considered a more Acliberal position ceptance of unmarried couples living together has jumped substantially since And support ol 1975 marijuana legalization has also increased On academic matters the trend is away fronr some of the reform in vogue a few years ago Fewer o: today’s students favoi evaluation student o Those faculty percent) calling for the abolition o (71 o Graduates Wilson 152 d Deborah Gayle Bradley Carolyn Boren Sarie M Guy Vivien Stamatakis Kathleen Stringfello grades have dropped fron 29 percent to 21 percent it just two years In 1969 thi figure was 59 percent (Continued on page 6) |
