Show 4— CEU— Friday Mar 3 1978 SPORTS H 0 College of Eastern Utah’s long season came to a closing triumphant Saturday night as they staged a trig upset win over nationally ranked College 4 in of Southern Idaho the last minute style of a grand finale Throughout the season Coach Jensen's Eagles showed moments of being a well rounded team but never kept the momentum going throughout an entire game This was not the case against the powerful Southern Idaho five During both hallis each team traded baskets and the game went nip and tuck until the final buzzer with neither team ever gaining a comfortable margin The Eagles were ahead 7 by two at half time and kept a close lead until 5 minutes were left on the clock when Southern Idaho went ahead by 5 leading 7 57-5- 29-2- 52-4- Southern Idaho looked impressive and kept the lead until Cortny Anderson hit a clutch shot to put the Eagles behind by one with 1:28 remaining C£U fouled Idaho and put them in a one and one situation at the charity stripe Idaho missed and the pressure was on CEU's freshman sensation George Minick in a do or die situation An instant hero Minick was hot and hit for two points with 40 seconds left with the score 4 CSI shot twice and 55-5- missed but not before fouling Minick in the Tracksfers Break Twelve of College Eastern Utah track records were broken during the indoor tract season which ended last weekend as the team returned from their final meet in Flagstaff Arizona CEU has been competing since January against 2 and schools from Idaho Colorado Montana Arizona and Utah to gain experience and keep in shape for the upcoming spring track season which starts March 11 with a meet in Las Vegas Nevada The times and records of each CEU tracks ter and 4 year Nevada event includes: Sammy Fatunmbi a freshman from Nigeria breaking the record in the 60 yard dash with a time of 6:38 seconds Charles Stein a freshman from California had the next best time at 640 seconds and Danny Lucero a freshman from Sandy came in third with a 653 seconds time Fatunmbi also broke the school record in the 300 dash with a time of yard 3243 seconds Stein broke the school record in the 440 yard dash at 516 seconds while Lucero’s best time was school clocked at 531 Mark Hoyt a freshman from Nephi broke the 500 meter record with a 1:089 12 Parker 0-- 0-- 0-- Williams Ferguson Starner 1 0-- 0 9 5 2 4-- 6 22 2-- 2 12 Totals - 24 54 6-- 9 CEU - (57) - Bakker 9 22 Jennings 3 0-- 0 4-- 7 6 0 2 1 Minick 9 C Anderson 3 04) 6 Worthen 1 0 2 Totals Ohlson 1-- 20 2-- 2 0-- 25 7-- 11 57 Total Folds CEU -- 14 CSI -- 13 The Eagles were not as impressive on Friday night as they traveled to Rangely Colorado to play their last conference game only to lose In the final minutes 85-8- 0 Plauged with the flu bug several members of the were five Eagle weakeened One of CEU’s top scorers Cortny Anderson was unable to make the trip because of illness CEU took a quick lead lead the the game until throughout CNCC got the hot hand and 0 with 4 pulled ahead and held 71-7- minutes remaining The Eagles were' not able to break into the lead again despite the hot shooting of Minick with 27 points and 8 rebounds Other Eagles in double figures included Ohlson scoring 16 Bakker 15 and Jennings 10 points Records time and the 600 yard run at 1:1635 One of four local athletes Jeff Callor a freshman broke the 880 yard run with a 2:034 time John rebound with two seconds left on the dock By now the crowd was on its feet cheering for the inevitable defeat of nationally ranked CSI Minick sealed the win for the Eagles hitting both free throws giving a three point edge to the victors Box Scores: CEI - (54) Rayford 5 1 Bryant 3 0 0 2 6 Cay ruth 1 a sophomore from Salt Lake City broke two records He was clocked at 9:330 in the 2 mile run and 14:552 in the 3 mile run The long Jump is dominated by Price area athletes that include Boyd Hanson holding the record at 21'6” Bobby Potts best effort was 21' and Merrill Noyes came in third with a distance of 20’6" Dimitrious Georges a freshman from California broke the triple jump record with a distance of 43’ while Bobby Potts came in second with 41'5” Frank Zubal a freshman from Price broke the pole vault record with a height of IS’ Chris Orgill a freshman from Salt Lake had the best time in the 60 yd high hurdles with 772 seconds while Zubal came in second with 810 The one mile relay team comprised of OrgUl Callor Hoyt and Lucero broke the school record with a 3:3769 time Kelly Brown a freshman from Sandy had the best time of anyone on the team in the one mile run with a time of 4:470 Jeff Callor aad Mark Hoyt ran dally as part of track team's rigorous training sessions |
