code words to send friends and family a message without paying for a long-distan- call are guilty of telephone according to Kenneth O Hill Utah Public fraud Relations Manager for Mountain Bell Telephone “Many people apparently think there is nothing wrong with code calling but it is a serious offense" Hill said He pointed out that code calling comprises a large portion of telephone fraud and costs telephone companies and phone customers millions of dollars each year calls to Billing unauthorized third parties using a phony telephone credit card and the use of electronic devices to avoid payment for toll calls are other methods of telephone fraud he said In AT & T lost millions from telephone fraud causing the company to launch an intensive aimed at campaign fraudulent calls reducing The effort has proved quite successful and by the end of last year telephone 8 s fraud had dkreased 60 percent However incidents of telephone fraud increased last year at colleges and universities in Utah 1971 Mountain Bell Security has a program underway this year to investigate 55 East Main s all improperly billed telephone calls and to take necessary deterrent action There was one student involved in telephone toll fraud at the College of Eastern Utah during the 1974-7- 5 school year Mountain Bell feels that as more students become aware of the seriousness of the offense that college toll fraud can be eliminated and students saved the unpleasant experience of deterrent or prosecutive action In 1972 a private survey was conducted by the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company to determine whether college students understood that misuse of longdistance service is a crime The survey was conducted on four college campuses in and Washington DC involved 300 students The results showed that 43 percent did not take telephone fraud seriously and58 percent said they fdt they would never get caught It was interesting to note that 40 percent said they knew somebody who had been caught When how asked telephone fraud compared with other crimes students said they thought it was more serious than the session of Kt less serious marijuana than theft "Our goal is to let students know the seriousness of telephone fraud and to encourage them not to get involved" Hill explained He pointed out that a conviction for telephone fraud could haunt a person for the rest of his life “It’s unfortunate but many students don't realize the seriousness of telephone fraud until they are caught We feel that by informing them about it we can help them from becoming innocently involved" he said POOR |
