Show THE Page Two GOLDEN Note To The Editor Pride in the community and its institutions is often the most effective instrument for change and progress Pride in the reputation standing or quality of an educational institution is often as much a governing influence as the authoritarianism of the administration Of course there must be some cause or reason for the feeling we call pride College of Eastern Utah is as much a community college as it is a branch of the University of Utah Many of the activities at CEU are in a real sense community activities and as such the manner in which these activities are conducted is of public concern When sporting events plays or musicals are produced and performed well they become the focal point of local as well as school pride And when such activities are conducted or performed poorly they reflect negatively on the community as well as the sponsoring institution Anyone who has witnessed CEU basketball this season knows that in many cases the contests have not always been between the two opposing teams Often the officials who are not supposed to be factors in the success or failure of a team seem to be die deciding factors Obviously we can't hope that they be completely objective in all their calls however if you compare a game to a laboratory experiment with only two variables all other factors being constant it is apparent that the officials at CEU basketball games have not been the factors they should be Students citizens and the College Administration seem not to care enough about the reputation of Price and CEU to ensure that another team won’t get HOMER-ere- d If we honor and respect civic ins ti tuitions shouldn't we have enough pride to see that such possibilities and potential are realized? And especially shouldn’t we make sure that our pride is justified and based on reason and sound and honorable performance? In world history we speak of the Leyenda Negra which refers to the Spaniards during the era of world colonization Northwestern s and Protestants spread the word that Europeans Spaniards represented the were murderers and lovers of bloodshed For centuries the Spaniards suffered from this legend which was founded on a few incidents Price has its own Leyenda Negra or Black Legend Before I came to Price I had heard of the permissiveness of the law officers the behavior of the cowboys and students on weekends Having lived here for a short time I am convinced that mostly these accusations are false However like the Spanish and the Leyenda Negra Price suffers a reputation not indicative of civic responsibility or a citizenry Such a reputation was undoubtedly born of only a few isolated incidents of only moderate importance However these incidents added more fuel to the fire of those who want to believe in the legendary reputation of Price Such incidents became blanket indictments In the last analysis the issue of poor officiating is an issue of pride It should be a point of pride that residents and students make certain that teams and spectators don’t go home feeling or knowing that Price is a town where you not only must beat the opposing team but also the referees Leland P Hofeling non-varyi- Anglo-Saxon- anti-Chri- st well-meani- ng out-of-to- Phi Rho Pi USU Madalone graduates and acquainted them with the University in Logan It has been said that the graduates from a Junior College do better than the sophomore graduates at the larger Universities and those who transfer before finishing the graduation requirement at the Junior college This is why the representative met with only the sophomores Any student who missed seeing him and is interested in USU may
