Show THE GOLD EN EAGLE PAGE TWO Editorial U of U Observations by Marilyn Hlnkins and Rick Larsen “Chrony” Misinformed In a recent issue of the University of Utah's Utah Chronicle there appeared an editorial concerning this country’s junior college boom In it the editor gave the impression that he felt the junior college was mainly a glorified high school where academics were made easy for mediocre scholars The editorial also hints that not much of any real scholastic value comes out of a junior college He seems to feel that the greatest contribution of the junior college is that of giving lower income stu- dents a stop gap education True we at Carbon College must admit that the “U" is more or less our “mother” institution Either the Utah Chronicle is grossly misinformed or it hasn’t looked deeply enough into the picture Carbon College is a fully accredited institution Its faculty is devoted and well trained A cross section of its students could well hold its own if compared with students from a much larger school It is a cosmopolitan school In its own right Graduates from Carbon College seem to adjust very well to larger institutions They have even managed to make quite an admirable name for themselves This proves that just because one goes or went to a junior college he needn't have hay seeds behind the ears or live on Poverty Row In our society the impression is often given that a thing must be bigger to be better But its high time certain people realized that very often the nicest things come in the smallest packages Sophs Honored In Assembly An nwards assembly last Thursday honored sophomore students who have distinguished themselves in a special manner during the past two years Outstanding student awards were made by the following departments: Science John Menot-t- i Music Terry Zupan and Bonnie Anderson Art Gene Tobcy and Don Young Athletics Bradley Brlmhall Speech Mike Peterson Drama Steve Codding-toCosmetology Loraine Fau-se- tt Business Rondall Lee Fullmer The Most Active Student award was given to three students this year Recipients were Gary Nick Karen Robertson and Paul n' A recent editorial in the University of Utah Chronicle launch- ed an abusive attack on junior colleges Carbon Jr College specifically The editorial asserted “The Board of Regents not only must handle the art controversies of the University but also must look into the affairs of a smaller institution located in southern Utah Carbon Jr College” Lucile Jensen registrar has anthat summer quarter classes will begin June 22 Class schedules arc available In the 1 1964 Ortega Proposes Letter to the Editor Name Change by Pat Ortega The entire studentbody seems to be crying out "Bring back football!" I have yet to understand why For the past couple of years football at Caibon has served for nothing except as conversation materials Even then it seemed to be dealing with the defeats rather than with the victories If our football teams had won national recognition then it’s cancelation would have been a lot different We would be losing something! As it is we lose nothing more than a financial burden For many years Carbon College has concentrated on football and for a while produced some excellent teams But even was not fed after he was dead Football has been living at the expense of Carbon’s other by Pat Ortega When ever possible I feel that the name should fit the college Now Caibon College is good ubt is entirely lacking of any information which will give an accurate picture of how affairs stand Many people would prefer College of Eastern Utah but alas this too only gives an approximate location Now I’m quite certain some
