contest sponsored by the Deseret News ‘and Salt Lake Telegram in cooperation with the Journalism department of Brigham Young University The Deseret News has sent LaRcne a book entitled “Voice of the West" by Wendell J Ashton as an award for her outstanding work in writing Beverly Ganser editor of the Carbonicle won first place in the same contest last year Alan Jacobs former editor of the paper won first place two years ago These students hold scholarships to Brigham Young University for their achievements CARBON VISITOR INTERVIEWED Former Student Takes Studies at Annapolis Charles Bikakis a graduate of Carbon high school and Carbon College was informed by Senator Wallace F Bennett (R Utah) that he has been selected as one of the appointees to enter the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis Charles has been attending the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan Last year he was selected as an alternate to enter the Air Force Academy in Denver Colorado Number IS Polio Drive Rated Success at Carbon Once again funds are being raised for the annual polio drive This money is used primarily for research on polio vaccine and to help those who have already contracted the Carbon Carbon College was the scene for the University of Scouting Convention held here January 20 21 and 22 It was the fourth time this event has been held here and was for Scout leaders from Carbon Grand Emery and San Juan counties Attending were 143 Scouting leaders of whom 112 received awards for at least 10 hours of class work This program started Friday at 6 pm and continued all day Saturday and Sunday morning a total of 16 hours of meetings This meeting was directed by the Carbon district Boy Scouts of America Sections taught for the most part consisted of Scouters from the four counties Parley O Neeley aided Saturday and is a member of the Scout troop committee Sunday a talk was given by D L Roberts who is leadership training director of the Utah National Parks Council |
