Show DEATH OP OF SPEAKER REED distinguished SUO SUC affer SHORT former speaker of tl ti e fro se of Re represent presen was co it e I 1 to if III is lied led hut but seven day days wl en he parsed I 1 peacefully to the great hey d thomas brackett reed fornie speaker of the house of re presenta tives and for many years one of the most prominent characters in pahe public life Is dead bis his death occurring in washington D C at 12 10 ci clock sunday morning after a short illness the immediate cause of death being ardern a at the bedside when he died were mrs reed and bliss miss katherine Kat henne reed doctors gardner mcdonald bishop and goodnow and the nurses mr reed passed away peacefully and apparently without pain thomas brad ett reed was born oc tober 18 1839 in portland me and received his early education in the common schools of that city in 1860 he lie was graduated from bowdon n col cola 4 lege winning one of the highest hon ors firs the prize for excellence in eng lish compos t on tl TI e next four years were spent by mr reed in teaching and the study of law before defore his ad mission to the bar he was appointed acting ass stant paymaster in t the he united states navy after his discharge in 1865 mr reed returned to portland passed the bar and entered on the practice of his profess on three years later he was elected as a republican in athe the w legislature of the state of maine in 1130 he was re elected reelected to the house and in 1870 made state senator pass ing from the latter position to that of attorney general of the state the same year retiring from this office after effective service in 1873 he was then land c in september 1876 he was elected to the forty fifth congress of the unit ed states which assembled in de cember 1877 he immediately be came prom nent through a speech one of the few formal ones ever del de feied by him in which he argued against the pavement ment of damages b bv the unit ed states for injuries received by william and ind mary college at the ban Is of unite I 1 states troops dunn durin i the war yar the subsequent policy ot of the government in relation to war wat cla ms was largely determined by the defeat of this measure to which mr reed signally contributed he wai also one of the minori minority tv members ap pointed to investigate the election of lent hayes in the famous hayes tilden controversy his sl ill III as a de bater hater was at once recognized and his influence becoming more strongly marl ed each year the leadership of his parts was finally conceded to him and in the forty ninth and fiftieth congresses the complimentary noir nation to the wag tet dered him by the republicans in the fifty first congress that par ty having obtained the ascendancy ha he was elected speaker on t the he first bal lot in the first days of his adminis gratien of the office much opposition was made by the minority to the en ell of whit mr reed bel eved his constitution lal ial i ci ver to boint int members present in the house as par in a vote despite their re fasal to use their pr the q les leg tion of s lence on such occasion con ng legal absence and the destruction st therel y of a quorum was however set at rest by the adoption of ne v 1 lules tiles by the house february 14 1890 in september of the same year mr air reed was re elected reelected to the fifty second cr ess by a large ma jonta mr reed proved himself an ie le worker enen e en while in congest cong con gast s and aside from his duties aa a congressman ron gressman and speaker he found time to contribute to several maga of the day articles pertinent to the var ous political and econ mic q lest ons v were from time to time agitating the country |
