Show arv F DUNCAN CURRY CUR RY THINKS WELL 1 or NEW SHAMROCK I 1 N ansi Z I 1 za writing in the chicago american duncan curry the yachting e expert ay sir thomas lipton s new challenger tor for the america cup shamrock III the hope of britain and the apple of designer fife fifes eye was dry docked at the erie drie babin june 10 for the first time her graceful hull and pow erful lines were revealed to american yachtsmen in all their strength and beauty the new challenger made a favor able impression to everyone and the more you look at her the more certain becomes the conviction that she Is go ing to be a hard boat to beat unde any and almost all conditions when the waters of govanus bay fell away from her snow white enam am aled steel hull bull it was as though some one had pulled a dirty brown curtain la an art g gallery diery and revealed some ancient grecian garble statue As the ato tok k slowly emptied its foul water through the sluiceways exposing her beautiful lines to view there was a general murmur of admiration and as one designer put it she is a won der fully modeled boat of absolutely fair lines and beautifully finished this does not mean that the cup is lost by any means but that our yachtsmen will have to be up and doing to beat this new challenger Is certain and if the reliance can beat this boat very much in going to wind ward the writer and several other people will be surprised but to get back to the boat shamrock III Is a beautiful creation and is well put together she shows beautiful deck lines looking from her taff rall forward she has a nice sheer and a view of her sheer plan would probably bear a strong resemblance to that of shamrock 11 II although her lateral plane has not been cut away so much her lateral plane appears to be cut away to about the same ex aw tent as the Reli reliance ances s but its area I 1 1 greater the beam of the challenger Is much farther forward than in shamrock I 1 and her run has been carried out to a aider taff rall than mas a shown in shamrock II 11 she has a well turned bow fairly sharp although there Is an outward curve all the way down her en trance must be good and she Is not likely to be stopped up by a head sea in a light air this curving of 0 her sides is carried clear to the end of the counter her bilges are very easy and at the section the curve seems very moderate the depth to the rabbet Is greater than in any challenger since valkyrie III giving considerable more dead rise than might be expected in a modern cup challenger with this quick rise there Is flatness of floor a soft curve being carried to the turn of the bilge in all she is a yacht to be greatly ad mired even more so perhaps than our modern american racers with their bodies constantly approaching cheout the out and out scow form |
