Like every business owner and taxpayer in the State of Utah, I despise having to pay taxes, and hope ‘and pray my “contributions” are used wisely, but | despise even more the tax loopholes created for the ultra-rich and elite that are able to protect their interests at the Capital by the use of high-paid lobbyists. This is what NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED at the state level as SOON AS POSSIBLE!! It is totally wrong in my opinion to allow large, multi-million dollar corporations to target Utah for expansion, while they take advantage of Utah's low-wage labor force by offering wage scaics just slightly higher than minimum wage -while they siphon the low-taxed profits generated by Utah workers Country, visit the new imdustries we have and they were able to see the problems we have. It could result in the state turning most of the state highways to the Citties and Counties. I am on the Transportation Committee, I will not be in favor of this bill, I feel it will be an under-funded state mandate. I will be in close contact with the County Commissioners; and City officials in my district on this issue. I am proud that the Milford area is in my district, I think the economy is much better than it was when I was elected six years ago. My Standing Committees are Transportation and Political Subdivisions, (Vice Chair), this committee deals with city and county issues. My Appropriation Committee is the very important Capitol Facilities and Administrative Services, in this committee appropriations for buildings and facilities are determined. One of my first contacts soon after election was with John E. Gledhill Pres./Chief Executive Officer of Milford Valley Heathcare services. John has asked for my help on several occasions and I have been able to assist him. On two recent occasions he called on me to enlist my help in getting two foreign trained physicians approved to practice medicine in Milford. I was able to contact the proper federal govermment agencies and obtain the approval that was needed, as a result Milford was able to have two phnysicians in service much sooner. Corporate funds that remain "working" and "building" in Utah are good news for Utah and should remain at _ the lower LEAVING tax rate, but I believe corporate funds the state, should be taxed at least at THE Left to right: Gina Ogden, Katie Elmer, Jennifer Hendricks Thiele, Vickie Howley, Southern SAME RATES AS INDIVIDUALS - this is only fair and just, and could very easily result in a much needed District President Mary Sower (in back), Loretta Forman and Sherri Yardley. TAX BREAK for the small, middle-class Utah family attended her funeral,” Gina Ogden, member of the that really MAKES THE STATE RUN in the first place. 1 WILL NEVER FORGET THAT FACT!! A lot of "misinformation" has been spread around that I am totally opposed to Circle 4 Farms and therefore I am an "enemy" to agriculture and business . growth and development. Some would even like the people to believe that I am a member of the "Sierra Club"! Sorry to disappoint, but this is just not true. I like nothing better than helping my Uncle and Cousins move our cattle on BLM ALOTTMENTS located in Garfield County. | am TOTALLY sympathetic to the struggles shall livestockmen face DAILY in trying to earn a living, and I clearly understand that AGRICULTURE has always been the BACKBONE of District 72!! This is exactly why I am concerned about Circle 4 Farms - when does an agricultural interest “cross the line" and operate as an "industry"? At what point does concentrated rumen-less hog waste become pathogenic to humans and begin to dominate and endanger resources that other local agricultural interests also depend on? Believe me, I understand the issue - it is like a large vacant lot in the middle of a nice ‘subdivision - a nice vacant piece of land that is good for ‘nothing but weed- growth - surely the neighbors would not oppose a nice, new, expensive house being built there - it helps the "neighborhood" and if it is truly a "really nice, large, well-built house" it will undoubtedly raise the value of every neighboring house. But what happens if the residents of the new house decide to breed dogs, - not just a couple of small litters, but THOUSANDS of dogs - again the residents wouldn't mind, IF THERE IS NO SMELL, NOISE, OR HEALTH RISKS - each of which would threaten other residents’ standard of living! This is simply my goal, in every issue, and that is to protect ALL agriculture interests*not just the largest and wealthiest! Women of the 70's and 80's, consumed by the “have it all blitz” of career, home and family most often achieved only work, housework and homework. Ogden suggested a more realistic goal of “balance” for 90's women. She was one of four district candidates in the Young Careerist competition hosted by Milford B.P.W. on Saturday, April 18. Candidates from - each of the chapters in the district were:evaluated by the judges on a point system in five areas: Personal Accomplishments, Personal Interview, Speech Presentation, Group Interaction and Helping Others to Achieve. B.P.W. members Arlene Malchus and Loretta Forman were joined by Gerry Wavering, an impartial male community member, to judge the contest. Points were extremely close for all candidates, with Vickie Howley emerging as the winner. Howley, a member of the St. George iz Lamb preformed musical numbers including “My Heart Will Go On” and, to the delight of the crowd, “Rocket 455.” Chapter, is a team leader in the intensive care unit at Dixie Regional Medical Center. She is a primary care nurse for critically ill newborn and pediatric patients. B.P.W. helps Howley toward her personal goal of self-sufficiency. Howley will represent the Southern District as candidate for State level B.P.W. Young Careerist. The State winner will represent Utah at the National Convention to be held in Orlando, Florida in July. As Southern District Young Careerist, Howley was awarded a two night stay for two in Mesquite, courtesy of the Casa Blanca Hotel and Casino. Other candidates were Jennifer Hendricks Thiele, Cedar City, and Katie Elmer, Milford. Thiele is an agent with Great Western Realty, and a graduate of Southern Utah University with a major in Accounting. Elmer is the Environmental Programs Manager at Circle Four Farms. She is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in Environmental Engineering. Elmer expressed a common- sense approach to the work-place. “Don’t be afraid to say ‘I’m worth more’ and don’t be intimidated by harassment,” she advised. She also cautioned that slack behavior, taking too many days off, and shoddy performance, when practiced by one woman, reflects on all women. The Milford B.P.W. served a luncheon, featuring a number of specialty home-made salads and food items, for the Southern District gathering. Circle Four Farms provided a ham for the main course. 1 |
