Show MARCH Beaver County Monitor 19, 1998 PAGE 2 fa Beaver Marine Tested in the Crucible The corps already: demanded more than the other services in boot camp. Then they decided to make it tougher. Troy Gent. 19 of Beaver. Utah at Camp Pendleton. is cold, hungary. covered with mud, soaked by sweat and chilly rain, and exhausted both mentally and physically. He has never been happier. He has just endured a 54 hour gut-busting ordeal called ~The Crucible” The capper to 12 arduous weeks of marine corps boot camp. A regimen that a national commission has suggested the other military branches. which have softened their own training. would do well to emulate. Gent's reward for his preserverance is the right to be called a marine and to possess a miniature of the eagle. globe and anchor that consitute the marine corps emblem. To Gent and other recruits of Charlie Company it is a matter of immense pride that basic training in the marine corps is tougher than that NOUS THI AL of the Army, Navy or Air Force. The moment-by-moment ordeal of the crucible is devoid of glamour, but the pinnacle is pure theater. The Crucible course at Camp Pendleton is laid out on 3.100 acres of hills and deep gullies. The oreal begins at 2 a.m. Thursday when recruits are ordered to gather a full pack. including their M-16 rifles. and fall out. In 2 % days. the recruits will march 40 miles. cat only prefabricated food and be allowed 4 hours of sleep a night. The course has 32 stations: obstacle courses. stations to inspire. others to develop problem solving and encourage team work. The last stage of the Crucible is a nine mile march through mazes of valleys and finally up a steep, slippery hill called “The Grim Reaper.” After completeing the toughest. most demanding recruit training Elder Spencer Whittaker Elder Whittaker has received his call from the LDS Church to serve as a full time missionary in the Fort Worth, Texas Mission. Official Arrival of Spring Hansen Planetarium is alerting everyone to the official return of Spring on Friday, March 20 at 12:55 P.M. MST. Known as the vernal or March equinox, the arrival of Spring in the northern hemisphere marks that moment when the Sun passes northward through the celestial equator. The celestial equator is an imaginary line in space above the Earth’s equator. To mark the event the Planetarium will present a free 30 minute equinox program beginning at 12:15 P.M. on Friday the 20th. Weather permitting, the planetarium’s solar telescope will also be open to give the public an “up close and personal” view of the sun. As Patrick Wiggins, education specialist, explains it, “One way to think of the equinox is that time of year when the hours of daylight and darkness are pretty much equal.” The next such event, known as the autumnal or September equinox, will occur when the Sun passes southward through the celestial equator next September, marking the start of Fall. Similarly, there are two times a year when the Sun is furthest from the sky’s equator. One is at the start of Summer in the northern hemisphere. when it’s furthest north, and the other is at the start of Winter in the northern hemisphere. when it’s furthest south. These events are known as the summer (June) and winter (December) solstices. Wiggins also noted that while Utahans and others who reside in the northern hemisphere mark the vernal equinox as the start of the longer, warmer days of Spring, those in the southern hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed, see this event as the start of the shorter, cooler days of Fall. The CDS can produce maps at scales of 1:24.000, 1:100,000 or 1:250.000. dedicatory service forthe new L.D.S. Chapel located at L.D.S.
