VI “Milford High School Total Cost $3,908,371 Walt Schofield, Milford High principal, classes the architectural design of the school as excellent. “The view is fantastic. I really like the way it fits into the hillside. Generally, everyone seems pretty happy and content with the building,” he said. Schofield added that although the school is rated for 400 students, it is more than 90% utilized with the current enrollment of 207. Some creative scheduling is already necessary to serve all of the programs and accommodate a vocational agriculture class. The school has 10 class rooms, a 400 seat auditorium and practice gym. The main gym, vocational building, and sports complex make up the remainder of the campus. Letting Go Isn’t Easy What did they cost? Guilty on all counts! Justin Weyman, Iron County prosecutor, claimed a somewhat hollow victory Friday when the jury found all three of the Immanuel Foundation defendants guilty on all counts. The defendants argued their cases pro se. Tony Hamilton, who spoke for himself, Georgia Lee, and David Stratton, stated in his closing remarks that they were indeed on the property at the specified times when they were arrested, leaving the jury very little to deliberate about. Who attended court? Various Immanuel Foundation members not named in the charges observed the proceedings. Approximately twenty “common law” advocates, including James Looney, Chief Justice of Liberty Township, Sandy, Utah. Most wore a small, unadorned American flag on their lapels in protest of the gold fringed flag displayed in the courtroom. Boy Scouts from throughout the county attended to earn a merit badge. County Attorney Leo Kanell answered questions for the scouts, and explained various aspects of the case. Max Limb, Beaver County Assessor, attended with his close friend, James Eldredge, tax sale purchaser of the Vance Springs property. Wives of both men joined them for most of the day. Tyson Hyait, Daily Spectrum reporter, attended the full day in court. Watch for his article. Perhaps, the unsung hero in the courtroom was Bryan Jackson. As court appointed, standby counsel, Jackson had no real power to present a defense. He did, however, give as much aid as the defendants would accept. After the trial, he described the day in court as: “Tt was like being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night, tied to a tree, watching someone set fire to my house, and being forced to watch it burn without having a chance to put out the fire.” Jackson said he had prepared a closing statement related to the role of civil disobedience in society, All defendants refused his offer to present it to the jury. "Beaver High School Total Cost $5,839, 729 Beaver High Principal Richard Albrecht is favorably impressed with the new school. “The new school has enhanced our ability to teach and be effective. The teachers feel that the students academic performance is excellent. There were less deficiencies this quarter than ever before,” he said. Albrecht added that he appreciates the work of the school board in providing the new building, and especially appreciates those who have to buck the opposition. The new school has approximately 20 classrooms, a cafeteria, auditorium, practice gym, and media center. Current enrollment stands at 490 students. Attributes of the auditorium and stage were favorably displayed in the r t perf f “The Ki dT’ Your Commissioners Are Spending Your Money Beaver County voters gave their commissioners a blank check by approving a $6.5 million bend issue on November Sth’ And.......their commissioners are about to spend it......plus a few million more. They met with architect, engineer, and builders to discuss options. Favored plan appears to be a 160-bed jail with additional 12 holding cells, two courtrooms, plus all desired staff amenities at a cost of slightly more than $7 million plus site acquisition and startup costs. Bottom line price is likely to be around $9 million. Using a design/build concept, if the county breaks ground on the building in March of 1997, it could be completed within one year. Six months to one year of training is required before the jail is operational as a revenue source. As of press time, there are no firm estimates on any of the cost factors: Building, Land or Start Up. Public hearings are scheduled for each of the three communities in the county during the next week. (see page 4) Some Basic Facts To Consider: I.
