Show NOVEMBER 7, 1996 A a Beaver County Monitor : oR PAGE 6 BS MHS Wall of Fame Mack Page Whittaker was bor in Circleville, Utah, the first child of Phyllis and Guy Whittaker. When Mack was ten, his father purchased a farm in Milford, and the family moved to the Milford Valley to raise sheep and grow potatoes. It was on the farm that Mack learned the value of hard work, especially when his father purchased a dairy, and Mack's work extended to a seven-day week. High academic achievement was always a goal for Mack. when he entered high school, he earned honor roll status each term and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Preferred Tiger Court, and served as student council representative his senior year. Basketball and football were a vital part of his high school years, where he played on the varsity teams. A bom actor, Mack was the hit of both the senior Play and the School Play. His ability to communicate and express his opinions creatively have helped him to obtain success in many areas. Life has always been a challenge for Mack, but he has never let setbacks influence his outlook on life. when he was a Junior, he waged a hard-fought Mack Page Whittaker campaign for student body president, only to lose the election by two votes. Ingrained in his personality is that certain spark that enabled him to earn a Doctor's degree while supporting himself, his wife lola Young Whittaker, and their two small boys, Curtis and Shaun. His daughter, Jill, was born after his college years. After receiving his B.A. degree in chemistry from Brigham Young University in 1962, he attended the University of Utah where he received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in 1966. In 1984 he attended a business program at Columbia university. MHS Principal Walt Schofield (left) receives a $200.00 check from the Milford Lion’s Club, presented by Tom McGinn. The money is to be used for the of the Carbon Division for Reynolds Metals company. From 1983-1987, Mack served on the Board of Directors of Copetro SA and India Carbon. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Canyon Corporation in 1983. toward a football/track scoreboard. Total cost of such scoreboard is about $7,000. Among future community projects, Milford Lions plan to work with Union Pacific Employees Club to build an enclosure at the Pavilion. Mack served as the Vice President of Great Lakes Carbon Company from 1983-1987 and is presently General Manager Mack has been awarded 34 U.S. patents and has authored 29 technical publications. He is a member of the American chemical Society and the American Institute of mining & Metallurgical Engineers. He is a founding member of the India Carbon Society. Never forgetting his roots, Mack returns to Milford each summer to visit his family and relive memories of the town school that molded his character and helped him achieve his dreams.
