PRELIMINARY PLAT Bruce Hughes and PAGE 4 Eee contemplated writing a column to share with readers of © :~ 2 3 3 : :- 0 the “Monitor”, as interesting and informative health related commentaries present themselves in my reading. Topics will vary and, hopefully, be interesting and positive. I will not always list the sources of my materials, to conserve on space, but they will be taken from the most recent literature. You may call me for references, if you choose to read further on the subjects discussed. Hopefully, you will find this column fun, thought provoking and informative. It’s sole purpose is to promote the health and well being of the readers, and to share concepts of wellness rather than to leave them within the confines of the journals, texts, and periodicals that cross my desk. It should not be taken as medical advice nor is it intended to replace the advice of your licensed health care provider. LIFE PURPOSE: A leading author once wrote that the leading purpose of life is to serve, Noting, “He that might be great must be the greatest servant.” Jesus emphasized that in his teachings. Try to seize every opportunity to serve, whether with a Boy Scout troop, P.T.A., a volunteer at the schools, as a Sunday School teacher or in some form of community service. Try not to pass by these opportunities, as we don’t get that many. Dale Carmegie once said, “Instead of worrying about what people say of you why not spend your life trying to accomplish something they will admire.” May I offer this column to you in that spirit. HEALTH OUR TOP PRIORITY: Priority is defined as ‘that which takes precedence, ...that which is most important.’ Everyone wants and seeks health above all things including wealth. Health is not merely absence of pain, but a return to wellness. The body heals and returns to health on a priority basis. Your body’s healing energy is directed to your most serious problem first. This 1s why patients often respond with, “I feel better, but I still hurt”. The body will always prioritize it’s repair schedule. Sometimes pain goes away first, other times, fatigue and so on. If you think about it, this is quite rational. Everything it does follows reason and logic, even though we. may not believe this to be so~To get well the body sets a series of priorities based on it’s needs. “Pain and other symptoms will change as the priorities of the body changes, because the body rebuilds itself as a unit rather than piece by piece. The body’s energy, muscles and frame must be in balance, and on tone, to allow the a body to accurately select the best way to make repairs...to heal...to return to wellness. PROTEIN. Out bodies are made up of about 20% protein, and about 70% water. About 3/4 of your body solids are protem. The ancient Greeks coined the word “proteios,” which means of first importance.” Proteins are made up from 23 known amino acids. Unlike plants who manufacture their own protein, we must obtain protein from the food we eat. There are nine essential amino acids derived from complete protein foods such as meat, dairy, fish and poultry. Fruits and vegetables frequently lack one or more of the essential amino acids and are considered incomplete. Therefore, it is essential to combine non-animal proteins to form complete proteins, like rice and beans for example. What is important, is to get all the essential amino acids daily, since protein cannot be stored in the body for ling periods of time. The body will feed on itself if protein intake is inadequate. Protein intake as reported by the British Medical Association should be between 80-100 grams per day. Not enough protein can result in deficiencies leading to disease like conditions. Too much protein is also dangerous. Animal proteins are often linked to fat, which as we already know can be a deterrent to our health if eaten in excess. Protein is an acid producing food, over indulgence can lead to an acid condition in our bodies called acidosis and this also can lead to conditions of disease. So, eat animal protein in moderation and eat diverse vegetable proteins to get a well rounded supply of amino acids. Don’t ‘over do it’ on acid rich foods. DIET: A well rounded diet should contain approximately 75% alkaline foods and 25% everything else, one author recommends. Alkaline foods are simply fruits and vegetables. Acid foods are meats, poultry, nuts pasta, bread and grains. Too much of a good thing, in this case protein, causes excess acid accumulation in the body. Simply stated, toxic acidity is cell stifling, and can lead to disease. One author recommends consuming four times as many alkaline foods as acid foods. DRINKS: Fruit Juice, vegetable juice and water are best as they help maintain the alkalinity of the body. Coffee, tea, alcohol and sodas are acidic and should account for less than 25% of your fluid intake. Poor - nutritional choices, including too much protein as well as too much fat, salt, sugar and stimulants can also lead to disease. Government reports show that six out of the ten leading causes of disease in the United Sates are diet related. The “Standard American Diet,” is making us sick. It is too acid and too toxic. Following these simple diet related guidelines will help you regain or maintain your state of wellness. |
