Show PAGE 5 - Beaver County Monitor , "Historical Tidbits ” SEPTEMBER 20, 1996 Just a Memory For the first six months of 1943, I was aboard a destroyer, U.S.S. Waller(DD466) at Guadalcanal. There were various duties, skirmishes and boredom. One event has remained vivid in my memory for over 50 years. Our destroyer was assigned as Picket Boat, for a week. We went midw ay between the Jap and American forces, patrolled back and forth between islands and kept a Radar watch for anything that moved. We were on a ‘Semi-General Quarters’ duty. Four hours on duty and four hours off. If the off duty hours fell during the daylight hours, then there was other work to do. | =” We averaged four hours sleep each day. After seven days the crew from Captain to Seaman was numb with fatigue. We retumed, past Guadalcanal and went into the harbor at Espirito Santos. We tied up to a large ship to take on supplies and wie tied up, were allowed to close down our / Radio Circuits. y After releasing the men I went out on the bridge to get some fresh air. Standing opposite of me, on the other ship was lone sailor. This was unusual and | studied the man. _| Unbelievable!!! Standing there, almost half way around the world from Milford was Lamar - Hig Morris. Oh! it only took seconds to get another radioman to take my duties and get over pie to talk to him. le world! divas Rhett White Elder Jairus Rhett White : has been called to serve in the , Australia Brisbane L.DS. will be speaking in : ye . ; ‘toe Den Oe | ‘daughter of Nelson and Buffy 552] we ther celebratd: 00 p. mM.
