STRESS ON THE FARM AS REAL AS STRESS IN THEOFFICE By: John DeVilbiss - LOGAN- The serenity of a field of alfalfa blooming in the wind masks the sweat and worry it took to get it there. Although the setting may be more peaceful, farmers don't have it any easier than urban dwellers when it comes to stress- they just pve different kinds, says Glen Jenson, Utah State University Extension family and human development specialist. While stress cannot be avoided, there are things farmers and their families can do to help them better cope with stressful situations. Jenson suggests you begin by asking some basic- and telltale- questions. Do you sleep the entire night? Do you feel rested in the morning? Do you eat well-balanced meals regularly? Do you take regular breaks during the day and are those breaks relaxing to you? "Some of the first signs of too much stress show up innthe bedroom by the person being unable to sleep, stay asleep during the night or feet rested after a night's sleep,” Jenson says. "A complaint og farm women is te meals are not able to be served on time and regularly due to the unpredictable nature of farm wor! Just as a building will eventually crack and crumble due to stress, oe: signs show up in humans who are under constant stress. It takes the physical form of stomach problems, increased blood pressure, alcoholism, irritable behavior, insomnia, heart problems, low job performance and increased numbers of accidents, he says The accident rate for farmers, for example, is highest at planting and harvesting time, when there is a threat of bad weather. For this same group, accident rates are most frequent between 10:30 a.m. and noon and then again between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. "There is some indication that accidents could be prevented if farmers were to take regular breaks,” Jerson says. Much stress can ‘be reduced by being more aware of its cause. The Iowa Extension Service recently published a Life Events Scale for Fatm Families. It is designed to help farmers measure and recognize their stress levels. To use it, complete the following checklist by placing a check by any item that has been experienced during the last 12 months. If an item has been particularly upsetting or stressful, place two checks by it. If your score is in excess of 15, you should take serious efforts to begin lowering that score. ee are many things on the checklist that can be changed with concerted effort,” he says.
