The remainder of those funds provide a basis for addition in yearly increments of 192 beds per year, adding 1other 192 beds- to 966- in late 1997. The state also has 86 beds in Iron County. Counting the 3,295 beds definite at Draper, 774 definite at Gunnison and 86 defines in Iron County, the State of Ut will have a total of at least 4,155 beds (4,347 with the second increment in Gunnison) in use before the Beaver County jail can be»mpleted. There are currently 252 county jail beds available state-wide. Duchesne expects to have be ready for 120 state prisoners by Aql of 1997. ~ Washington County plans to come in with about 2.00 beds in late 1977 or early 1998. Sub total is now 4,919. The Salt Lakeounty jail will come in with 700 to 1,000 beds at about that same time. Taking the smaller figure the sub total is 5,619. Various otheriunties are also reportedly adding to their beds for rent- not to mention the jail in Utah County which the taxpayers have refused to fith. Minimum projection for jail beds ready for use by late 1997 is 5,619. Keep in mind this figure is without Beaver thaty beds. Now, for the other side of the coin: As of April 18, 1996, total Utah State inmate population was 4075, down slightly from acord high of 4,104 on April 10. This includes all inmates - the 104 housed in Texas, 53 traded with other states, 9 in the state hospital, 1n halfway houses and 1 in USU Medical Center. The 1995 inmate population increase was 550 total (4 times the rate of the previs year and _ highest increase rate in Utah’s history), fora year end total of 3,971. Drugs are for profit, arid it is absurd to believe that they do not exist in such institutions. If state prisoners are housed in a jail in Beaver City; Beaver: County, just exactly what route would you expect those drugs to travel in getting to the prisoners in that jail? Quite recently, residents were ready for all ‘out war because an incident of “adult entertainment” was allowed in the county........in a well-regulated private club for paying members over 21-years-old. With righteous indignation, they demanded protection for themselves and their children from the secondary effects of such entertainment. Drug dealers do not play by the rules. They do not come into the community for one well-publicized evening, targeting consenting adults.
