Show MARCH 1, 1996 Salt Lake, Boise Milk Sales Lead the Nation BIRTH MACHINE “OUT OF CONTROL” SPEAKER SAYS 90 DAYS FREE" Salt Lake City- The keynote speaker for this years’ annual conference of the Utah Midwives Association, a former World Health Organization officer, says the birth machine is' "out of control" and technology is used inappropriately in childbirth: Dr. Marsden Wagner, M.D., says the use of technical devices during childbirth is not based on proven value or medical indication. Devices are used out of habit, for convenience.(of the doctor), out of fear and for financial gain, he says. Dr. Wagner, a perinatal epidemiologist and perinatologist, was the Responsible Officer for Women’s and Children’s Health for the World Health Organization. He is the keynote speaker during the vente conference of the UTAH Midwives Association, March 9, 1996. The conference begins at 9 am at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum, 300 North Main, Salt Lake City. Also scheduled to speak is Holly Richardson, R.N., speaking on "Grief and Loss". Kristi Ridd, Certified Doula Trainer, will be speaking on "Birth's Continuum: Women, Families and Society”. Dr. Wagner has written a book, entitled,"Pursuing- the Birth Machine, The Search for Appropriate ‘Birth Technology". In it, he challenges physicians who use expensive and inadequately evaluated technologies during childbirth.Inappropriate devices can include electronic fetal monitors and sonagram machines, Dr. Marsden says. These devices should be used only when absolutely necessary, he says, because not joie research has been done on the effect of ultrasound.
