Show WMeritaey | TWO STATES ISSUE WARNINGS: “STAY OUT AND STAY ALIVE” Two young men, in separate incidents on the same day, have been killed in abandoned mines in Utah and Colorado. Last June, mines in Nevada and Idaho also claimed lives. Falling mine timbers killed Jeremiah Effington, 18, on Saturday, January 13, 1996, while he was . : : exploring a mine near Stockton, Utah. In Grand Junction, Colorado, a 20-year old man entered a mine with a vandalized closure and died from mine gas poisoning. Mine openings may seem safe to explore but are dangerous and can contain unstable soil, unsafe roofs and ladders, deadly gases. poisonous snakes and dangerous explosives. "The states' abandoned mine reclamation programs are closing old mines as fast as we can." said Mary Ann Wright, director for the Utah abandoned mine program. "But, with over 40,000 mine openings estimated for Utah and Colorado, citizens need to be aware of the dangers and take responsibility to stay out-" Vandalism of some of the closures also leaves people open to dangers. "Dealing with vandalism continues to be the most frustrating part of doing our job." said Dave Bucknam, administrator of the Colorado mine safety program. "Protective closures or warnings around abandoned mine hazards are placed there to reniind visitors to enjoy the outdoors, but play it safe by keeping out of abandoned mines. Vandalism to these closures threatens lives." Utah and Colorado are working together to get the word out about abandoned mines. Education programs in both states target school children with information about geology, mining history and abandoned mine dangers. Each year, 40,000 fourth graders in Utah are provided a workbook which details the hazards associated with abandoned mines. A video, "Utah's Abandoned Mines, Stay Out and Stay Alive!" has also been sent to each 4th grade classroom. For more information or to report an abandoned mine, call the Utah Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program, (801) 538-5340, or the Bureau of Land Management, (801) 539-4031.
