By Mrs. Margaret Miller The Milford High School chorus sang the while Anthem National drenched fans and nervous _ players tried their best to keep warm in the enormous - Rice Stadium on the University of Utah Campus. : The : time Is that Dusty Wiseman in the driver's seat? had come : to decide who would receive the 1-A title--the Milford Tigers or the Rich Rebels. Rich Coach, Jerre Holmes had commented before the game, "If we are going to beat the Tigers, we are going to have to play a perfect game." They played that perfect game to give Rich the first 1-A state title of any kind that they had ©VeF won. Rebels Rich The defending the defeated champion Tigers by a score of 12-6. The Rebels had lost earlier to Milford by a score of 18-6, but this time they combined a_ ball- hogging ground game with a tough defense. Sophomore Rebel Brad Weston ran 240 yards to score two touchdowns and register 317 rushing yards in the score book. All the scoring in the game took place during the first half. Weston's 63-yard run up the middle gave Rich the early lead, but Milford's Barry Barnes scored for the Tigers with a 9-yard TD strike from Rick Rose. The Rebels scored another touchdown with a 26-yard run by Ellis which set up a short TD run by Weston to put the Rebels ahead at half place this year, I AT the first of the year, we weren't suppose tobe so good, but 9-2 is excellent.. I think our problem was that with a record of 8-0 we got cocky and thought we couldn't be beaten. If we had been beaten earlier in the year, we probably would have won the _ state championship. We had a great season that was full of fun. Hopefully, the lessons we have learned and the winning attitude that we had will carry into the sports that will follow this year." Tiger Coach Bramall learned some lessons of his own. The bad weather forced the Tigers to practice in the gym. Coach Bramall expressed feelings of gratitude as he remembered his first year at M.H.S. "We had a good season. I'm proud of all the boys, and I felt it was an honor to coach this group. I want to thank all of the students, fans, and parents for their unbelievable support." This is only the second time in M.HS. history that a Tiger team has played for the State 1-A title. We are proud of our Tigers and look forward to seeing this winning spirit enter into the rest of the school year. |
