SWTHFIELD Sky Region One View was primed (or a state tournament rematch with top-ratSkyline but the Orem Tigers had different ideas Orem ambushed the Bobcats 2(H) to earn a state quarterfinal berth and provide a disappointing conclusion to Sky View's brilliant season "Give the credit to Orem" said Bobcat Head Coach Doug Adams "They're a good football team and we Just didn't play well" The opportunistic Tigers took advantage of several big plays and key breaks to put the winning points on the board and the solid Orem defense would not allow the Bobcats to get back into the game After taking over following an unsuccessful Orem fake-puattempt the Bobcats had a golden scoring opportunity early in the second quarter strike to Quarterback Brad Pond fired a Dave Petersen to give SV a first down at the Tiger 15 but the Bobcats were turned away by Orem's superb goal-lin- e stand Reserve signal-calle- r Kenny Simmons had come In to replace the injured Pond for one play and teamed up with Brad MerUl for seven yards to the Tiger seven but Ken Gifford was stymied Just short of the first down on a fourth-dowcarry Orem waa unable to move the ball out of Its own territory and punted to the Bobcats but regained posseaaion two plays later to pave the way for the Tigera’ initial score Lannle Shurtleff intercepted a Pond screen pass and rambled 22 yards to the Sky View 28 Orem covered the distance in 10 plays to gain a 0 advantage The paramount play In the scoring march came on 0 a situation Tiger passer Kurt J aussi connected with tight end Richard Allen for 22 yards and a first down at the SV 18 Jaussi then threw to Brad Molen to give Orem inside the Bobcat five and three plays later the senior quarterback sneaked over from one yard out Bill Bradshaw added the extra point and Orem led 0 at the Intermission kickoff and atSky View took the second-ha- lf tempted to establish Its running game but the Bobcats were unable to pick up a first down on either of their first two possessions Orem then got the break which enabled the Tigers to maintain the upper hand Jaussi was Intercepted at midfield but the play was nullified by a roughing-the-passcall against the Bobcats and Orem went on to score The Tigers kept possession with a first down at the Sky View 31 and Molen and Matt Johansen carried ed 4-- A terriroty Molen picked off Pond's deflected pass near the line of scrimmage and sprinted seven yards to score to put the encounter ail but out of the Bobcata’ reach Bradshaw's kick was wide right but the Tigers had a insurmountable 20-- lead Orem preserved the shutout by recovering a Sky View fumble at the Tiger ten following a previously flawless Bobcat march Pond’s pinpoint passing led the way as SV moved from its 20 on a drive in seven plays but Gifford was hit hard and fumbled and Johansen recovered for the Tigers to end the threaL The Sky View drive the Bobcats' best offensive production of the afternoon was highlighted by Pond completions of 10 18 and 18 yards to Kevin Glen and a toss to Todd Sadler However the Bobcats came up short again epitomising the frustration of the day for Adams and 0 nt d rd rd n hia dub "I'd like to be able to make up aome excuses but there Just aren't any" the Sky View mentor ad- mitted In apite of a slow start and the constant pressure of the Orem pass rush Pond completed 11 of If passes to account for 120 of the Bobcats' 175 yards in total offense Orem compiled the same number of first downs as Sky View (nine) and had less total yards but the Tigers came up with the big plays at key moments in the contest to annex the win Sky View was playing its third game in nine days but Adams did not use that as a reason for the Bob-eatsub-pperformance “Orem had to play three games too” he noted "We were just very flaL" 7-- third-and-2- s’ first-and-go- al ar Team statistics 7-- i 1 Orem running back Bryant Herman is brought down after a short gain by a pair of Sky View tacklers The Bobcats limited AUMaJ nOw IkAU ITWy K0T9Q run (Bill Bradshaw kick) -
