The most common method is to construct a divided oil tank which has oil in the top and fuel in the bottom with a small almost unnoliceable valve connecting that half of the pickup tank USAC and CART champ cars arc allowed 40 gallons of methanol fuel on board the ear But more than one driver has installed a larger fuel cell then stuffed foam rubber between the fuel cell bladder and the metal wall until it is small enough to hold 40 gallons ' After technical inspection a crew member (under the guise of adjusting something on the chassis) would yank out the foam rubber tank and vuila! His driver has a whuh means he can run about two laps longer than anybody else before he has to come in for fuel USAC also limits the total amount of fuel for champ car races alloting each team the same number of gallons the idea being that the victory will go to the team with the best fuel mileage possible But many times in reality it's gone to the team that found the best way to smuggle extra fuel into the pits One way to get it there was inside the long hose connected to the refueling tank Just before the race two crewmen would haul it out the ends sling over their shoulders and walk to the pit area What officials didn't know was that the middle of the hose which hung between them as they walked along was filled with two extra gallons of fuel Other crews sneaked extra fuel In via inconspicuous looking tool chests on the back of their motorized carts The most common way was to put a fake tool chest in between two real ones with a small spigot hidden in the rear In the middle of all the machinery loaded on the back plus a couple of crewmen riding It was usually never noticed The only risk was a pedal As one crewman got to take It slow when line 'cause you don't heavy foot on the explained it: "You you drive out to the want 'em to hear anything sloshing around" One team believe it or not even sneaked fuel Into the pits in its water bucket Water was how one champ car team won a race a few years back Leading the field but knowing he didn't have enough fuel to finish the driver slipped into the pits had five gallons of water added and then roared out again The driver knew of course that water and methanol alcohol mix which meant he suddenly had five extra gallons of fuel Naturally it was such a thin mix he couldn't run full throttle but it kept bim going long enough to take the checkered flag One of the most recent fuel tricks on the USAC stock car trail is called "Super Bob" a special fuel for qualifying that some drivers bring along with them from home then substitute for regular gasoline when they make their qualifying run "I don't know what it is but it's a mixture that really turns cars on" Driver Sal Tovclla said "You can't run the race on it but for (Continued on page 10) I |
