Of Be. $2,500,000 MOAB, o Preliminary geological reports indicate that a sizeable beryllium strike has been made in Colorado by N.N. Beryllium Corp., Utah, it was announced today by company General Manager L. E. Stein. The find was made on company property in the Mount Antero Region, Chaffee County, Colo. The company has some 20 claims in this area. In a written report, J. T. Collin, M.E., said the beryl (BeO) was found in unusually large crystals and had been deposited in a quartz veinw Specimens assayed ran between 10 and 19 per cent BeO. Ore samples also indicated the presence of other marketable minerals. Collin estimated the property to have a potential equal to .the best beryllium producing areas in die western hemisphere. The area, without question, merits careful and extensive exploitation. Berillium is one of the minerals now on the strategic list of the U. S. Government. A recent report issued by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the government intends to step-umining and metallurgical research on beryllium together Colb-Rexa- ll with other rare metals. 440-acr- gineering is being done by . N. Beryllium strike in Colo. p Beryllium is used in steel and copper alloys, atomic energy and in other processes. Collin said that although known beryllium areas in the western hemisphere were probably adequate, the major known resources are in Columbia and Brazil. . Current government price for beryllium in $47 to $51 per short ton, or 20 pounds. The first shipment of ore from the area is being prepared now for the government buying station in Custer, S. D. Ore found was in a channel more than 400 feet wide in the shinarump formation. The company hopes that the tunnel presently being driven will Intercept an extension of the ore channel. In the Adams Hill area the mine is in good shape to proceed actively with the exploration of the horizon at the base of the Hamburg limestone, Thayer Lindsley, president, reports. Several irregular ore bodies have been indicated by drilling, and the company expects to find others in its exploration work at the 950 and 1050-folevels. Present ore in sight is running per cent lead and around $20 in gold and silver, Lindsey said. Underwatering the Fad shaft, where drilling has indicated the possibility of several million tons of good ore, is, being considered by the company. With the water level in the Fad shaft stabilized at a working level, extra electric power would be available for mining and milling operations. No decison about constructing a mill at Adams Hill this year was made, however. ot 15-2- 0 - |
