Utah Page 2 WESTERN MINERAL EDITORIAL SURVEY Know Basic Mining Laws The complexity and multiplicity of legal problems arising from the expansion of the mineral industries presents a problem not only to the legal advisor, but to the prospector and mining NEWS 431 Basic mining laws do not cover, completely, the problems confronted by uranium and other new prospecting fields. But the major problem today is ignorance on the part of the men who traipse the fields, stake claims and carry on mining operations. As pointed out by H. J. Vander Veer in a recent article in the Utah Magazine, Are You Jeopardizing Your Mining Operation?", the same men who carefully check to see that they have dear and secure titles on their homes, cars, etc., are not so careful in their mining ventures. Vander Veer points out that there are many companies operating, producing and shipping ore that have not had their properties investigated and action taken to dear die many small defects that occur in their possessory to the mining claims they operate. They just hope, he said, that no one ever brings action, maintaining that they have an interest in or held prior existing claims over the ore body. He urges even the smallest mining operator to be aware of laws, and take steps to insure his property, by getting it patented for full protection. Otherwise law suits and legal problems will be the answer. The legal estate in the western states is being made acutely aware of the complexity of the problem they face, now and in the future. Initial steps are now being taken by legal leaders to correct this situation. A new publication Legal Guide for the Uranium Prospector," written by a lawyer, and published by the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Society, goes on sale this week. The University of Utah law school is insuring the future supply of legal mining experts by offering a complete course to students in natural resource law. The school is one of the first in the nation to offer a complete course. They antidpate further expansion of the course witl) aid from mining and other industrial firms.
