Still another 8,000,000 families receive from $1500 to $3000 a year and to them have been afforded some economic and social safeguards by the New Deal which make them loyal to it Below these however are 11,000,000 families whose yearly earnings are $800 to $1500 and who face wage slavery unless Democracy is made to work. Still lower are another 8,000,000,000 families who earn less than $800 a year, who are the "forgotten members of American society. 'Whoever wins this election must face these conditions. The Nation must face them too. Democracy will work if a spirit of national unity is engendered among all classes, but this nation, long ago, decided it could not exist "half slave and half free. All is not lost, regardless of how the world may seem to be crashing about our heads these days, so long as our teachers and our youth maintain the sane and hopeful attitude they hold today. Democracy is not a SYSTEM, it is a way of life, and can never he regimented. Once regimented and it becomes something else entirely. Teachers cannot teach democracy they must live it. And the fundamental principle of democracy is: "What Gan I Do to Help! not "1 Have a Bight to do that and Im Going to do In the past we have insisted on the latter concept, and it has led us into all kinds of "individualism, most of it bad for the state, as well as the individual Today a new world is upon us, and new conditions make it imperative that democracy look to its defences and we believe the first defence is : Cooperation, the spirit of helping one another. We say this in all seriousness we say it to big business and to little business. Our first line of defence is to live with and for each other. "Free Enterprise is the most abused American system today. American business has taken this to mean almost entirely that it is FBEE to operate as it chooses. That day is past Its operations must be for the good of all, not just for the good of capital, nor for the good of labor alone, but all three parts of business capital, labor, and consumers must be served. Democracy will become obsolete and a thing of the past right here in America unless the following picture can be changed, showing how the millions of American families are classified as to income : 280,000 American families receive $10,000 a year; 800,000 American families get lietween $5,000 and it. rHiumtooi) meeting for All Ifalchlaedak priesthood quorum lu tho Utah itako will bo hold Sundur lu tho Fourth ward ehapol, announcaa President Royal J.
