The twin sisters, Jenne and Ethel Magafan work with a limi ted pallette, stressing the design quality of their compositions rather than painting them liter ally as a photograph. Their works are done in ahollow planes and prove the Magafan sisters to have considerable talent in a variety or media and approaches. Three contrasts in Decorative Style has works by three young artists all of whom are represented in major galleries. The three, Stuart Edie of New York and Hester Miller Murray and Ralney Bennett of Chicago work from entirely different view points yet each manages to fret an Interest ing patterned composition. Stuart Edie, who works mostly with gouache, simplifies his work yet secures an almost sculptured ef fect. Ralney Bennett uses large masses as patterns which he combines with a Japanese use of direct color for strikine effect. Heater Miller Murray, paints wiin a cniurs picture book ap- proacn achieving wholly charming compositions. The Utah IncW of American Design ranks with tnat of Mas sachusetts for the excellence of its work in preserving and mak Ing available the early arts and crarts or the state. These water-col.reproductions are more accurately done than the most carefully taken color photograph. So competently painted are they that the watercolor Index plate cannot be told from an original textile sample. The current Art Center showing includes several plates from a very elaborate Relief Society friendship quilt; specimens of wood carving from the St. George Temple; and a number of samples of early Utah homespuns and early farm implements. Several of the plates painted by the Utah Index of American Design have been printed in national magazines. at tracting considerable attention to the early arts and crafts of Utah. The color prints by living American Artists are part of the National Art Society selection and show the brushwork of the artists for the benefit of the student almost as accurately as the originals. The current exhibitions will be the Utah Art Center gallery attractions until July 30th when they will be replaced by a large showing including "Art from 79 Countries" shown at the San Francisco World's Fair in 1939. At 90 a msn might reasonably think his usefulness to his country in war time had ended. But Sir Ambrose Fleming, famous scientist; has invented st that age, a simple lamp for signaling from ships, the signsls of which can only be read by the specially equipped receiver for whom they spy-pro- are intended. Until this invention anyone could read the continuous signals from ships in British naval bases and harbors if they knew the code. The secret of Sir Ambrose's lamp is "polsrized" light Light consists of vibrations. In ordinary light these can bound in all directions. Polarized light looks the same to the naked eye, but' the vibrations are confined to a single plane. The projector sends out a beam of light For the dots and dashes it changes momentarily to ordinary light The naked eye cannot detect the difference. But the special receiving instrument filters the polarized light and makes it sppear darker and of a different color.
