Buchre of the University of Cincinnati is excavating a rock layer here which already has produced parts of at least five sea scorpions that roamed this area several hundred million years ago. The fossils discovered so far are the rarest ' in' years, according to Dr. Kenneth E. Caster, curator of the university museum. The species is new to science, he says, and the genus hitherto unknown in the country outside of a small area in New York state. However, the rock strata in which the fossils were embedded belongs to the Richmond groups, which is several million years older than the strata in New York where related sea scorpions have been found in the past. , The excavating party is seeking to uncover the remainder of a fossil nearly three feet long, which indicated the sea scorpion must have been feet in nearly three and length when alive. All the material is being studied by Doctor Caster. Enough now is on hand, he says, to make possible a fairly complete description of what the scorpion looked like years ago and to reconstruct to life conditions the ancient sea bottoms when the rock layer was formed. Doctor Caster explained the fossil sea scorpions, had bodies covered with horny, material of the same texture now prevalent on crabs and lobsters. Like the modern sea dwellers, he added, the ancient animals periodically shed their skins in order to grow larger. Sea scorpions are distant cousins of later marine types from which today's desert scorpions have originated. The Ohio fossils are designated as pterygoids or winged forms because of their wing-lik- e paddles. Quarrymen in Scotland, where pterygoids first were found, called them "seraphims" also because of their paddles. of geology students p two-thir- ds (Continued from page 1) FEBRUARY 9, -- 19S9 combined air forces of all 'ng European nations combined Tvmber 700,000 men by the end 3? it Is claimed by observers v activities. Buddy Pelkey, e dog, is a pupil at the Soule district school. In three years Buddy has not missed a single session and has been tardy only once, according to Miss Loret-t- a Teague, teacher. E.ddy is the constant companion of Bernard Pelkey. A black, wirehaired Scotch terrier, he walks a mile twice a day in eoinc to and from school with his master. In the schoolroom he usually retires to what the pupils now call "Buddy's corner" and remains there quietly until Bernard leaves ' the room. At recess time or during fire drill Buddy follows the other pupils out of the room, always bringing up the rear. "When he first started coming to school the pupils paid more attention to Buddy than they did to me," said Miss Teague. "But the novelty of having him about soon wore off and now he could hardly be called a disturbing influence. "By pointing out the dog's devotion to Bernard as a result of the boy's kindly treatment of him, we are able to use Buddy as an object lesson in kindness to animals." a four-year-o- ld OMAHA. third-grad- "Pooh, pooh," said Denis, noted explorer, to the dangers from wild animals and native populations in the Belgian ConAr-ma- nd -- i -- -- vrsr jr i the above map show locations of the residences of 140 of the Utah Light and Traction Company employees living within shopping radius of Sugar House Dots on For the past fifty years the Utah Light and Traction Company has been serving the House District and has been happy to watch and assist its Sugar growth.
