The same endurance, which Mesopotamian users praised 5.000 years ago, now protects 70 per cent of the road mileage in the United States. of all highways in this country have been fortified with asphalt against wear and weather. This syrupy black road surfacing, called asphalt and bitumen and pitch down through history, was already on the job in ancient Babylon, where King Nebuchadnezzar had streets paved with it. A road glistening with asphalt was a contribution to civilization of which he boasted. About 60 per cent of todays production of asphalt in the United States, 25 centuries later, serves the same purpose. Leaves Solid Surface. "Nebuchadnezzars paving project involved the use of burnt bricks embedded in asphalt. The modern highway can be coated directly with a rubbery black sheet of the ages-ol- d material, or a bitumimn.s filler may serve to cement road gravel into stability. He has captured a large number of snakes, lizards and other reptiles and placed them in cages where he can study their life history and habits in their natural habitat. "I turned loose six diamond-bac- k rattlers to roam about the camp," he said. "One of them is 5 feet long and a big fellow. They do not roam far away, for I provide them with food and water, and they stay around the other caged snakes. They are as good as watchdogs to protect the camp. Philadelphia tried a sidewalk sample in 1838; Paris and London then ventured upon some asphalt strips; in the 1870s ttvo American cities, Newark and Washington, tried experimental patches of the same material. By 1930, two million tons of asphalt were being poured yearly upon roads in the United States alone. "The thirst of dusty streets was. originally slaked from the asphalt lakes cf Trinidad and Venezuela. Enterprising modem petroleum refineries have learned to speed up geologic processes and quickly to separate asphalt from oil. Only 22,000 tons of the natural product came to serve the United States from Trinidad last year, and refineries produced four and million tons. Home-mad- e asphalt has the advantage of being kept soft, while the natural product ia too hard for direct use; in some forms it is even brittle. "After roads, the next greatest use for asphalt in the United States is roofing. In shingles and in coated roof felt and other insulating materials, asphalt is ns important to building today as it was when it served as the slime or mortar, with which the Tower of Babel groped its confused way toward the sky. Ju;:t as buildings are roofed against rain, other construction jobs are roofed' with asphalt against dampness and water seepage; pipes arc painted with it to prevent rusting, tunnels arc lined with it, building and bridge foundations are wrapped in its protection. The climate ofi Canada was hotter than the tropica 400,000,000 years ago, according to Madeleine Fritz, of the Royal Ontario Museum of Paleontology, and: now an age of drouth is foreseen by Dan McCowan, Canadian natur, I alist Dr. Fritz says that between three hundred and four hundred mfflinn years ago coral teefs abounded on the southwestern fringe of Ontario, and sponges lived in the seas over Hamilton; sea lilies, a kind of shellfish, flourished on the present site of Petersborough. The prairie provinces, about the driest place in the Dominion, were, a great inland sea 50,000.000 years ago, she theorizes. McCowan blames the recession of Rocky Mountain glaciers for drouth conditions in western Canada. If the glaciers keep on receding in the next fifty years as they have in the last half century the rivers will be nothing more than rivulets," he be-- ! lieves. . j Strange Burial Rite Held Yearly by Clan CINCINNATI. A strange burial ceremony was held here for the sixty-nint-h timp when the body of John O. Gorman, sixty-on- e, of Vincennes, Ind., was in- terred. Each year approximately 400 members of the nomadic Gorman family assemble here in tribute to members of their clan who have died during the last year. The rite has been followed annually since 1870. The Gormans come from all walks of lifd, but annually drop their business pursuits to make the "pilgrimage of the dead." Col. James E. Gorman, leader of the family, manages a traveling rodeo. j |
