To work out these problems, lets assume that your ski has all of them convex lump at the tip, railed in the ski body, gauges in your base, and rusty, burred, dull edges. After completing all base work, take the ski out of the vice, and place it back, so that you can work on sharpening the edges. Ideally, you should sharpen your edges to a 90 degree angle. This is sometimes hard to do with a conventional file, and you might want to use one of the small edge file kits that are on the market. Again, working tip to tail, stroke with the file so that you put a clean, sharp edge on your ski, being careful that you dont round the edges. Now as a final step, take the emery paper and dull the tips and tails of your skis. A good general rule is to dull about 3 inches up from the tail and to dull the tip 2 inches to 4 inches down from the shovel. If you still have some burrs, you might want to make one very light pass along them with the emery paper. To conclude this part of your ski maintenance, let me say that I have found the above methods easiest for me, and they are offered as a general guideline. If you feel that your edges should be dulled more or that you want to hold the file a certain way, or change some of the steps, well ... you're your own boss. Also, the amount of time you spend on your ski will depend upon how often you ski. However, this work should be done at least once a season, preferably at the beginning. In flat filing, youve made the ski flat, taken off burrs, and removed rust. Now while your ski is still flat, fill in the base gauges. Make sure that the holes are clean, dry, and they should be at room temperature to ensure a better bond. Take your candle, light it with a match, and holding the candle dose to your base, let the candle drip into the gauge, let the area dry and scrape it flat with your scraper. Fill in the deep gauges in this manner. Small scratches do not need work, as wax will fill them with the 1974 cum GIVE P-T- ex never had a complete tune job.) Before you start youll need to go back to your ski shop to buy some additional tools. Along with your scraper-straigedge youll need candle the color a Mill of your bases, a Bastard file, a groove scraper, wooden blocks and some emery paper. (These are the basics, and if you feel that you need more tools, like a heavier file for real bad skis, or a file card for cleaning and sharpening your file, buy them.) Now youll need a place to work, with some space, good light and preferably with a vice. There is a vice on the market that does not use clamps or bolts, is portable, lightweight, comes with a file, and is relatively inexpensive. Youre ready to begin. Clamp your ski, base up, in the vice, using the wooden blocks, if needed, under the tip and tail-- . First, well take care of the convex lump. Using your straight edge and with moderate pressure, rapidly scrape down the convex spot until your base is . even with your edge?. If you find that youre not getting much base material, you may need to sharpen one edge of your scraper. To do this, put the file on a flat surface, hold the scraper at a right angle to it, and stroke the scraper along the file. You may need to do this periodically as you work the larger the bad area, the more youll need to sharpen your straight edge. With the removal of all the convex spots, youre ready to start flat filing. Hold your file so that the cutting teeth are running from tip to tail parallel to the edges, and begin filing with moderate pressure strokes. Be sure that you do not bow the file, as this will round your edges. (Some people place their thumbs directly over the edges. This is hard for me, and I usually use the palm of my left hand and the thumb of my right.) Take down your edges until they are flat with the base. As rou do this, you'll BEAT THE CITY Ask Dusty!
