A retired farmer, Gregerson now tends two acres in the summer and passes his winters chopping wood, read- ing almost anything he can get his hands on, and writing. A man, Gregerson publishes at his own expense essays and poems, which he passes out to friends and visitors. Recently, Gregerson entertained the editors of the Salt Flat News beside his wood stove with a recitation of some of his favorite works, one of which is reprinted here. Mormon Gregerson wrote the Flour years ago on open range. Taking his inspiration from a familiar landmark, White Sand self-educat- Mountain, the poet composed the first draft on a brown paper bag. Commenting on the legend of Chief Touracca, the writer admits he just made it up. Said Gregerson, Its probably one of the biggest lies I ever told." F0ot So thinking it was biscuit dust Climed off his horse and Some Millard County history Just once Id like to tell; Tis about the White Sand through the brush went sneaking. He crept along as if a cat; I judge for most an hour And then he cried, me findem Mountain Down beside the Flowing well. It sits out in the Valley With its surface white and bare Twould make one think the place Where white man hidem flour. Saints had piled Their tithing flour there. A spring lies to the East of it; Just a filthy little puddle: A breeding place for biting pest; Where gnats and skeeters eatem spme, me likem dat; White man flour make Injim fat, Me rest awhile, den fillem sack And takem home when me go back. So, he ate a heap and then he turned To load, on what hed sacked. A grunt, a groan; he then complained, Me belly feel compacked. Me ridem fast, me cannot wait; Me hope we getem shower So heap big Injim gettem drink To soak up Mormon flour. But when he tried to stand erect, He could not raise a hand. So he toppled over, face to earth; . One heap big bag of sand. Now dont think this a fairy tale: Tis true and honest history. But how he came to petrify; To me that seems a mystery. Me cuddle. But, long years ago the Pioneers left Their Eastern habitations; To come out where they could teach Religion to their future generations. Now they were troubled much with Utes; Especially Chief Touracca : Who sought to take their very - . lives; Also steal their provisions and NEWS Photo by R. Manilas C. Does spirit exist after mortality molds? Pray what is the logic as reason unfolds? Theologians say Yes, the Infidels No. Science uncertain, mere belief isnt so. ' Masses swept on in the maze of its spell. But the question remains, is there heaven and hell? For fancy or fiction I have no desire. I want understanding, not bogged in the mire.
