Show Sports SALT FLAT NEWS, SEPTEMBER, 1970 10 Little League's Leading Citizen When you meet Tony Kerbovich, you KNOW hes involved in sports. Its evident in every part of him his burly stature; crew cut hair; the brusque speech with emphasis from the hands. Every town has a Tony Kerbovich. Wendover is no exception. And, its a better town for it. It was Tony who began Little League baseball in Wendover about eight years ago. It was Tony who, each spring, crisscrossed the main street for donations to keep Little League alive. It was Tony who badgered contractors, excavators and businesses to donate free time and materials for the playing field. And it was Tony who worked on the field those times when volunteers failed to show up. Other peoples sons play the game. Tony has only two daugh- ters. But hie continues to coach. Each year he gets discouraged; the next year he's back for donations to start another season. 'About three dozen kids from seven and a half to fifteen years of age turn out. There are no - r Held, fencing, dugouts now under international rules in use because the small size of the town cant provide the age groups needed for those rules. Someday the town will grow enough for Tony to group players for international rules. Now, everyone plays. Tonys persistence has result-e- d in thfe leveling of the playing construction, a barbeque pit and rest rooms also under construction, an entrance sign and electric scoreboard. v . - Blue Flame To Ignite If all goes well weather, mechanical workings and that human element another attempt will be made this month at establishing a worlds speed record. Gary Gabelich of California, who once drove a jet car at 357 miles an hour on the salt flats in 1969, is to climb into the Institute of Gas Technologys rocket car the week of the 14th and attempt to break Craig Breedloves record of 600 m.p.h. Gary is a former test astronaut for North American Rockwell which may be indicative of the weeks event. foot long car, The thirty-eigh- t more aptly called a missile, is powered by a burst of liquified natural gas and hydrogen peroxide using a variable thrust mechanism which the institute says is similar to that used by the lunar excursion module in its moon landing. Originally scheduled for a record attempt last fall, weather and production problems forced the years delay. If weather is unfavorable, a back up week has been set for October 7th. The institute, in its news releases, has not explained why it is seeking to go more than 600 m.p.h. with a car which must be driven by a former astronaut! Must be pure hell in traffic. DEEDIIHP?
