The contract was awarded to Western Contracting Corporation, which is completing a previous- job of equal size. The new project requires removal of six million cubic yards of rock from the top levels of both east and west sides. The entire project will last 12 to 14 months. Removal of overburden is necessary to uncover ore. Two tons of overburden must lie removed for every ton of ore. The ore contains 16 pounds of copper to every ton, and this, combined with the rati oof waste rock, means that huge amounts of material must be handled every day to operate the mine successfully. This is the third contract for stripping of overburden awarded to Western. The previous contracts were for 10 million and 12 million cubic yards. Western uses diesel trucks and electric shovels. The trucks are capacity and the shovels have 13 cubic yard dippers. A truck operating at the mine is believed the largest in the world on a regular operating basis. The truck has a rated capacity of 80 cubic yards. It is 55 feet long, 16 feet wide and 15 feet high and is powered by two diesel engines developing 850 horsepower. The vehicle requires 18 ties and weighs 290,000 pounds when empty and 590,000 pounds when loaded. Western established a record for drilling and loading at the mine last month. Western loaded 47,769 cubic yards of rock, and believes this is a record average for every shovel was 1,354 cubic yards an hour. Hie drilling record was 3,436 lineal feet in one day.
