The young people, who have been backing off from their stand on such drugs as LSD and amphetemine, are still up in the air about marijuana. The sentencing of Dr. Leary is likely to make them really Unhappy with the estblishment. We believe that young people should ponder, with us, a few points on drugs. 1. In particular, Dr. Learys conviction was not for simple possession of illegal drugs. It is true that our laws are harsh on the young offender who is caught with his first marijuana cigarette. Dr. Leary is not, however, a young offender. It will be remembered that he was largely responsible for starting the whole LSD boom. Moreover, Dr. Leary was not caught with a cigarette or two on him, he was caught trying to smuggle large quantities into the U.S. from Mexico. 2. Young people assert that marijuana is not an addictive drug. As matter of fact, say they, it is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol. In answer to the first question: No, marijuana is not physically addictive, but it is psychologically addictive. The euphoria produced by marijuana is not long lasting, but the world of reality is very dull and grey by comparison. Thus, the smoker must have more to maintain the good feeling and loses interest in the outside world. Complete changes of personality are not uncommon. The second point is certainly no argument in favor of marijuana. To say that arsenic is really less poisonous than strychnine doesnt make arsenic desirable. The proper move should be not to make marijuana legal, but to put stricter regulations on the use of tobacco and alcohol. 3. The sensations that marijuana is alleged to produce, i.e. happiness, love, good will, perception and insight, are all available without it To achieve them, however, takes energy, determination and discipline. Marijuana, on the other hand, gives heaven with the striking of a match ; the easy way. To try to achieve happiness and peace of mind through drugs is not only the lazy way, it is stupid anything achieved that way does not last, and it cant be SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 20 Mr. Glen A. Printing Boom Needed some printing done fast? Apparently many people do, because one of the fastest growing businesses in the area servis the small ice. For a relatively low price consumers can now get printing done while they wait for it. ng Bring your material into the shop, the printer will photograph it, make a printing plate and run off one hundred, two hundred, five hundred copies for you. This through the modern miracle of photo-offsprinting. We visited one of South Salt Lakes newest businesses, the Postal Instant Press, on 2561 South State, to see how its done there. If you want, for instance, two hundred copies of a talk youve given, take your material to the printer. Jay Galvan, who is the man- ager of the new enterprise ex- plained why it was possible to make low cost quality printing available. Recent advances have made it possible to use inexpensive plastic printing plates for short runs. This, plus advances in platemaking techniques and machines, enable the printer to do a maximum of work with a minimum of overhead and space wasted. The result is quick, efficient, inexpensive service. The action followed as a result of a charge by Davis County Officials that the NET were using scare tactics, emotionalism and doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a means of mobilizing vigilante strike forces in neighborhoods throughout the state. The NET had allegedly been claiming alliance with both the Church and with Civil Defense organizations. Earlier, the Civil Defense had repudiated any connection. The rise of the NET is the result of recent rumors that student militant groups and the Black Panthers would demonstrate at General Conference, plus signs of increasing violence in the United States. NET leaders claim that the government on all levels is incapable of dealing with any crisis of this sort, and that the only protection is from tightly-kn- it neighborhood groups. Recent rumors of transportation strikes have given impetus to the movement. The NET points out that a highly industrialized society is vulnerable to attack from guerilla forces such as the Black Panthers. The Church, in issuing the statement, expressed faith in the regularly constituted forces of defense and lawkeeping. Beware Of Building Frauds The coming of spring heralds, among other things, the arrival of remodeling and decorating time. It also brings out the hucksters and bunco artists, who make money off unsuspecting householders. For your protection, the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce offers these hints on dealing with home improvement offers. Dont ever buy home improvements from a door to door salesman without first checking his company. Dont believe any remodeler who promise you a special discount if you will refer him to your friends and relatives. Dont fall for the old model the offer of a home trick reduced price if you will let your home be used for display or advertising.
