If you don't believe me look around you - youll see, give her a trip to Hawaii, get him an MG for Christmas, giver her a stereo -- out fit your skllers here for Christmas, get her an electric curler set, get a loan from us to make a Merrier Christmas. Its almost Impossible to go Christmas shopping anymore. I came to this conclusion the other day when I went uptown to get my brother a shirt for Christmas. It was like Everyman tor hlmslf! People shove and push and crowd In traffic until the happy spirit of Christmas is completely gone. Anway, It took me a half hour to find a parking place, someone ran into my car while I was in the store, I couldnt find the shirt I anted, and there was a parking ticket on my car when I came out. I went home very discouraged. As you walk down the streets you see huge creches In front tinsel Christmas trees, yards, colored lights draped on houses that have been left up year round. And speaking of Christmas trees, dd you know that people spend about fifty million dollars a year for Christmas trees plus a few millions more for decorations for it. I wonder how much they give to Sub for Santas and charity. I recently read an article on Christmas trees which stated: Recently this honored symbol has become an unbelleveable swaggering array of lights and balls which over shadow the true meaning of yesteryear. Any decoration, modest or magnlflcient, grows twice Its size in sentiment when it emerges a true Christmas sym- bol. The trees we have in our homes surely cant be a that wouldnt give them Its a time of children writing out long lists of the things they want Santa to bring them. But we cant blame the children, when after opening about 50 presis this all? ents, they say, If children dont know the meaning of Christmas its their parents fault. I read In a Christmas book these words, In all the year, there Is no day that fills the heart of the wold with so much joy as Christmas. I wonder how many of us really enjoy Christmas day Itself. After all your presents are opened, dont you get a feeling of diswhen you know Its couragement all over and there Is nothing left to look forward to. The rest of the day you drag around looking sad. I remember singing the words in the Christmas carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day that - - And in despair I bowed go my head, There is no peace on earth, I said, For hate Is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men. I think these words pretty well tell the situation of the world today. Christmas should be a family affair, a shared experience. Why cant there be Christmases like the old fashioned ones wth a big fat with all the trimmings, goose carols, oranges and walnuts, open hearts and open hearths. Good will you can cut with a knife. I dont meaneverywone should go around grinning like a cherub or nail Christmas cards to the mantle piece. But It would be nice If people would, just for once be a little sentimental.
