This challenge was issued Sunday afternoon In conference by Elder Paul H. Dunn of the First Council of Seventy who explored the theme, Has God really spoken to man today?" He related the statement of Jesus, who just prior to his crucifixion, declared, 0 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and ston-ethem which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathered her chickens unjler her wings, and ye would not." "Jesus," continued Elder Dunn, "was emphasizing one of the lessons of history that the majority of the people have never been able to recognize a living prophet. "In each generation, they have idolized the prophets of the past, while they stoned the living prophets of the st present," he said. g He asked people" if they believe that God could speak to a man who wears the common clay of their generation. "If so, youre unusual," he remarked, "because the rest of the people follow the human tendency to look back and honor only the prophets who are dead." Elder Dunn summarized the ways the prophets of old are honored by these people: They place these prophets on imaginary pedestals, they make a selection from their teachings which suit their own particular fancy, they honor a few popular phrases which identify them with these great servants of God and they smugly go along their own honest-seekin- men to pick their teachings to pieces and construct a crazy quilt pattern of personal inter pretation. "The Bible teaches that whenever prophets arc raised up. things will begin to happen: doctrines will be made clear, new truths will be revealed, prophecies will way. He said they could not do this with living prophets be-cau- se living prophets denounce those who profess allegiance to God, but follow the rashness of their own selfish lives. As to how prophets are raised up, Elder Dunn declared. "In all holy writ, you wont find a single instance where God ever selected a professional holy man to be one of His prophets. In every case, the call came like a bolt out of the blue, often to men who considered themselves weak and incapable and were amazed that God should honor them with revelation and a prophet ic calling, he emphasized.
