DRUG ABUSE By Senator Wallace F. Bennett The Congress of the United States has started its 91st session. Work already is piling up and the tempo for 1969 is moving into high gear. This seems an appropriate time for us to review what might be. in store for Utah under the new GOP Administration. At the outset, we can look to the activity for some kind of indication, and the reports are all very favorable. President Nixon, , Obviously delighted with the music furnished by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir during his visit to Salt Lake City last fall requested that Utahs famous singing group do a repeat for a world --wide audience at the Inauguration Ceremony. The Inaugural presentations, the concerts by the Choir and its appearance here, brought almost universal acclaim, for this singing grexoup. Three former Utahns were involved in the official program and ceremonies, and their performance also was exemplary, j. Willard Marriott was general chair man; Mrk Evans Austad was chairman of the Inaugural Ball; and Robert Barker was general cousel of the event. One of the first bills that I will introduce in the new session will be one calling for elimination of a major portion of the Ammunition Registration Section of the Gun Control Act of 1968. The Ammunition Section, which passed late last year, already is proving to be a burdensome and ineffectual process of registration. In the same law in the 90th session, the Congress adopted by amendment calling for mandatory stiff penalties for gun misuse and I am hopeful that this additional pro pre-inaugu- In Legislative Mill street sweeper and it will be in service on the city streets as soon . as it is practical. . The second half of the program featured the orchestra with Mme. Bachauer as soloist for Beethovens prestigious and moving Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major, commonly known as the "Emperor Con. Mme. Bachauer s performance was that of an artist of the highest musical integrity and dazzling technique. She has reached a period in her career where she is enjoying the fruits of a brilliant lifetime of experience. She gave one of her most stimulating interpretations. The Utah Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Abravanel is one of Utahs greatest assets and merits the support of every citi- -' zen. It is to be hoped that these outstanding artists, Princess Irene and Mme Bachauer will come again in the near future. . - Utah and 91st Congress The City Council went on record now before die State Legislature making it manda- Drugs and poisons, like nuclear energy, can be used for the betterment of mankind.. It is now time to get back to fundamental concepts of what is needed to make home a citadel of freedom, liberty and love. Time to recognize that the intimate relationships of husband and wife, father and mother, parents and children should be solidified by spiritual endowments. The modern concepts of moral freedom is undermining the struc-tu- re of family relationships. The strength of the home can only be as strong as the foundation upon which it is built. ' In all by years in Washington, Idoubt that Ihave seen anything quite like the unfortunate and uncalled for land grab by the outgoing Interior Department which, 90 minutes sp before leaving office in one on January 20, embalmed 264,000 acres of land in Utah, adding it the National Park System. Many Utahns shared by shock at this amazing action. As I said in a Senate speech, protesting the Interior Deptartment move: I find this action by the President as a parting slap at my state of Utah. We are a small state. Some 70 of cent our land is owned :per by the Federal Government. We mus rely on our mineral resources, on our cattle and sheep industries for our very survival. I do not argue with the plan to make these wonderful monuments into National Parks. I think they fully deserve the status. In January, Iintroduced for the fourth time legislation making Capitol Reef and Arches into national parks. In the past these bills have been blocked by members of the Senate Interior Committee as well as by the Interior Department. My bills call for making the present monuments into parks, but maintaining the present boundaries. Even a common criminal is entitled to a notice and a hearing. Utah has one million persons. I think they are entitled to due process and I will continue to press for it. ' J ' |
