Proposition 2 would increase compensation for legislators from $500 per year and $5 per day expense allowance while in session to $25 per day salary and $15 per day expense allowance. Mr. Oswald pointed out the results of a recent study of state legislatures which places Utah 48th in the nation in the amount of time the legislature is allowed to meet and 49th in the nation in the amount of compensation its legislators receive. Mr. Oswald urged: "With . the increasing demands made upon state government it is essential that we provide the legislative branch of our government with sufficient time and compensation to meet the responsibilities and do the job we both expect and desire. The workers are happy because they are doing together a job which needs to be done. This, in its simplest form, is a picture of the normal wholesome life. It has all the ingredients for happiness. Yes, there's joy in working. Happy are they who learn this early. From the beginning, our Heavenly Father willed that man should work. After Eden's brief experiment in easy living, our Fathers first children were put to work, tilling the soil, tending flocks, working. Only then, they grew and developed. How right and how fortunate was the young man of today, who, after feeling the thrill of achievement on his first adult job, wrote home to his father, half in earnest, half in fun: "Thank you, Father, for teaching me how to work. I love my job; I love the work. And just think, they pay me for it!" The Good Book is full of praise for work. Said the Psalmist: "His work is honourable and glorious: and His righteousness endureth forever." first principle of life, must be fortified by work: was work made faith perfect." "By Young men, young women: you who are living in a time of the shortened work day and the diminishing work week; of the indispensable car in which you ride intead of walk, if its only for a block; of the other which the ingenuity countless machines and gadgets and work-save- rs of man has invented: beware of the snare of soft living. Whatever the temptations to take it easy, remember this: Life will reward and punish "every man according to his works."
