Show page mlI b lAKLiLWS 'lhursaay, June became scarce. As months went by, hunger became a stark reality thourhgout America. Many banks closed their doors as people attempted to withdraw their money to meet their obligations, but many banks couldn't pay off and thousands lost their life savings. The full impact finally caused the worst panic and depression in American history. In Utah as well as other parts of the country, make work projects were initiated to help those in need of food and clothing and money to pay their way on a daily basis. on a group basis, to help people help themselves, finally resulted in the organization of the LDS Church Welfare Program as we know it today. Granite Park and South Salt Lake Stakes have more than 900 acres of land west of Utah lake, running into the hills, part of which is used for dry farm wheat. Also, the other principle crops are sugar beets and barley. At present, these crops are the means of nearly filling the stake budget each year, and providing funds for improving facilities and purchasing equipment. As these stakes accept the budget given them by the General Church Welfare Committee this committee is assured of funds and produce to continue to assist church members in greater numbers as conditions require. These two stakes for years have willingly supported, and produced their share of the welfare budget, more assistance per capita than most of the stakes in Salt Lake County. The Church Welfare Department in 1967 gave assistance to approximately 184,500 persons. The various units of the church found employment for more than 5,000 persons. The people assisted received more than 20,000,000 pounds of food, 11,000 tons of coal, and over 1,500, 000 items of household supplies, clothing and miscellanious. In addition to the above, the Relief Society' and Priesthood Quorums provide special assistance to the sick and furnish labor to members needing help in other areas. No active member of the wards and stakes need to look for help from outside their own area of residence. This is called the priesthood brotherhood in action". Thus, the men and women who furnish the manpower and funds to keep this program operating successfully each year are proud of their accomplishments receive just compensation for their efforts in knowing that reserve supplies, food and funds are available to faithful members of the church should they ever need help. Every year thousands of people from around the world visit welfare square at 7th South and 7th West, and exclaim with wonderment that such an institution is in operation by the church to protect its members against the day of adversity. Some have said, how can you do it". Others say, it is a miracle, wonderful, a great program, wish our church was doing something like this, better than the government welfare, etc.. The members of these two stakes should rally to the support of their leaders in greater numbers that all may feel the joy that comes from serving in this great production when the harvest is gathered in. This is me of the finest ways to prove we are our brothers keeper. en-terp- rize Power Tools, Keep Under Control For many years, the United States Health Service has consistantly warned parents to be watchful of the tools that are used around the home and yard to prevent accidents from happening to themselves, their children and visitors. Curious children are usually the most frequent victims. Heating appliances and power tools are two of the most dangerous and account for more than 100,000 accidents each year. Power mowers, especially the rotary type, can be seriously dangerous when used carelessly where glass, rocks and other debris is left on the lawn. Power saws and joiners cut off too many hands and each year to be used withfingers out ' due caution being exercised. Annually, 80,000 serious burns occur from boiling water and splattering grease. Caution should be exercised when using flammable liquids to start fires in grills, etc. Safety first programs should be a part of child training in every home. Adults should be very careful to keep children away from fires, and place poisons and other dangerous items out of harms way. loofioar Mora paopla In this community road this Nawspapsr than any othsr publication In tho world...
