Our band made a very shabby the in Sands High School and sorry aivnearanoe, due to the fact that the Sand Uniforms are about 25 years old. They have been handed from band to band over that period of time, and have now reached the point where they no longer are fit for use. Some weeks ago is certainly a very sorry appearing band and our town. Our poor advertisement for our high school band and its appearance is all that many strangers ever see A shabby and of both our town and of our high school. The effect on the student members of the band is even worse. They are ashamed of their band's appearance, they certainly don't play as well as they might and their interest soon lags or disappears. would seem that the School Hoard has gotten Its It worth out of tho present band uniforms by the moneys use over this long period of tine. It appears at the present time that we have a good music teacher in each ot our high schools, teachers who will take the responsibility tor the care and use of band instruments, music, unilorms, etc. and also teachers vdo will gradually build up interest so that we can have good organizations. I am sure It is the desire ot the School Board to build up our music organizations and programs so that they will be a credit tu our conmiunities, both from a standpoint ol quailly and quantity. It may be interesting Cor you know thaL lor the past two years the School Board has been subsidizing the high school activities program with School Board funds. In 195-5- 8 the School Board bought wrestling mats for each of the schools and also gave each school $500 toward helping with its activities program. In 1958-5- 9 the School Board gave each school $1,000 to help out with its activities we have allocated $1,000 tor program. For the school year 1959-6- 0 each school, again to help out with its activities program. The School Board pays Ihls money direct to the high schools with no airings attached so the money can be used tor whatever purpose the principal and faculty deem is desirable. Bear in mind that these grants sre made over and above regular school such as instructional materials, expenses supplies, books, equipment and other school operating expenses. I appreciate your nice letter and the interest of people of our in school affairs. communities Sincerely yours, sZenos L. Black, Superintendent |
