At least, those two schools enroll the most male students at the University of Utah, according to the fall quarter report of the registrars office. However, the ' gals had better stay out of letters and science if they dont want lots of competition. Engineering, on the other , hand, features both large qualities of men and a scarcity of women. In addition there is a series of surveys showing the progress women have made in the Republican Party Organization and the Recognition the Republican Party has given to women. As Miss Adkins pointed SltC out wowo- men and men are citizens, but men are comparatively newcomers in the public service and a chart of their progress is needed. It is encouraging to women to see gains they are making and it is helpful to men to see the increasing variety of posts women are holding, she stated. In the conduct of our govern ment on all levels, from the community to intemationl affairs, we believe it is the interest of both men and women that women have a part that their voices be heard and that qualified women be given opportunities to serve, . she concluded. The survey points out that it is in the appointive field in State, National and on Intemationl levels that women are making marked progress, both in recognition given them and in their willingness to N serve. According to the survey, since 1872 when the fifth Republican Nat ional Convention went on record with the first national declaration for favoring additional rights women, the Republican Party has been in the lead seeking those rights. The GOP pioneered the right of women to vote and was consistently its main supporter throughout the long campaign for acceptance of the National Enfranchisement of Women. The Republican Party was the first major party.' to advocate Equal Rights for women and the principal of equal pay for equal work regardless of sex. The survey points out that UJ5. Sen. A A Sargent 1878) (R-Cal- if, was the first person who introduced a proposal in the U. S. Senate to give women the right to vote. It lost in the Senate four times three times in a Democratic Senate. Twelve States, all Republican, had given women full sufferage in State elections before the Federal Amendment was ratified. Women and file Republican Party have long been synonymous since 1870 when the Massachusetts Republican State Convention seated two suffagetts as delegates, through 1896 when the National Convention Platform included the first formal Rights for Women Plank, .to the present. . |
