Show YOUNG REPUBLICAN KNOW YOUR GOVERNMENT fl UM Friday, September 26, 1958 THE UTAH STATESMAN Fare 3 by Shirley P. Novak Americans are the most fortunate people in the world, for they enjoy a stake in their government. By the same token, Americans are shrewd buyers. They want to be sure of a commodity before they invest in it. They investigate the relative merits of the different makes and models of a new car, a new refrigerator or a TV set. Every year they pay taxes for the privilege of living in a democratic country. But in this regard do they know what they are getting for their money?' The average citizen will complacently let the wheels of government turn without voicing his opinion and only an alarmingly small percentage of Americans will show up at the polls to vote for their representatives to the body of government or for the officers of state. Yet, Mr. Average Citizen will be the first to criticize when affairs of state dont run as smoothly as he would like. This apathy on the part of the populace, especially when we have the privilege of investigating the working of government with very little effort. It is our plea that you Know Your Government. Very shortly a week will be set aside by the Governor of the State to urge every citizen to do just that. Call on the various state offices and see the advantages offered to you,, the taxpayer.
