Geri Goenett of Juneau was crowned by actor Robert Redford before an audience of 500 people at the open air summer theatre Sept. 7. The new Miss Indian Utah is the daughter of Mrs. 'Rachel Goenett. She received her associate and bachelor's degrees from Brigham Young University in Provo. During the spring commencement exercises at the University of Utah, Miss Goenett received her masters degree in social work. The $1,000 scholarship awarded with the title will launch her doctoral degree program at the University of Utah. Miss Goenett was selected by five Indian judges from a field of eight contestants. The Miss Indian Utah crown of silver and turquoise was given by 26-ye- ar Horts Reschke of the Indian Arts Center in Salt Lake City. The pageant winner has worked with youth at the Tlingit tribe. During her second year of graduate study, Geri was among ten University of Utah social work students assigned to the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. The Ute Tribe Juvenile Court was her placement during the 1973-7- 4 ' school year. During the talent competition she explained her beliefs and theories tested through social work among Indian people. She also displayed artifacts and handiwork of the Tlingit tribe. A 21 year old Brigham Young University coed was selected first Mildred Cody from Flagstaff, runner-up- . Ariz. was also named by the contestants as Miss Congeniality for the pageant. She is a junior majoring in youth leadership at the Provo school. Miss Cody is a featured dancer and singer with the Lamanite Generation Indian performing troupe from BYU. She is the daughter of Mrs. Marie Cody.
