Mann is currently executive producer of the TV Kojak series. Mann in a May 31 interview with Pete Hamill of the NEW YORK POST said these things of the upcoming Brando drama: Marlon called me, I knew nothing about Indians. I was totally ignorant about them. But when I found out what was happening to them today, I was The American Indian society of Washington, D.C., has announced two S500 scholarship grants to be awarded to two Indian students who are in studies beyond the high school level. I didn't realize they rented Indians land without asking them, and they were paid a pittance for it, and it could be rented or not rented as they wished. And the prejudice against them! And what happens on the reservations! It's a totalitarian thing happening, right in our own country. When Brando talked to me about it, it sounded wild. So I went to South Dakota to find out for myself. And I began, you know, to understand why some people might have found it kind of fanciful, what Brando was talking about You end up putting it in its historical context, and you find that we really have a tradition of being marauding Europeans, not born out of generosity and everything else, and fighting savages and being wonderful people. But as bad as everybody else. ' Going there, up to South Dakota, really made me understand. Theyre the native Americans, and we've dispossessed them, we've disenfranchised them, we nearly starved them...God. In a May 26 NEW YORK TIMES article, Brando said he was chairman of the new American Indian Development Assn. (AIDA), a private organization p projects for Indians. sponsoring He said the proceeds from the new movie would be donated to three Indian organizations. Said Brando of the conditions of Indians in America: Indians dont want a handout-the- y want a leg up. American Indians wake up colder than anybody else in America, they wake up hungrier and with more hopelessness than anyone of us. We dont realize that theyre a conquered people living in what amounts to a foreign country.
