A Editor Ute Bulletin Fort Duchesne, Utah You know as I am setting here reading the Ute Bulletin, I cant help it but remember the times that I use to be drunk, that most people did not like me or cared what I was to them I was just another drunk. But while I am here at this center I have looked at my self real hard and thought what the other people thought of me as I was drunk. I honestly would like to know what or how they saw me. I think most of us who are Alcholics would like to know. Maybe not all but I would like to know. But as we have said, we know that people will not tell us what we looked like. It takes a person a long time to find out that he or she is an Alcholic. But as one little written page stated, Why am I the last one to know?" Why we did not know was that we did not listen nor payed any attention to what was said to us. We are known as die hards. We have done what we wanted to do that we were unwilling to change. The mention of death or dyeing of Alchol did not scare us. We still went on continueing to drink our seifs to death. As it is put, an Alcholic is not so easily scared by death or dyeing of Alchol. To us the meaning death is just another word. We think we wont be dyeing. We are amunt to it so we go on. Some like me find out the hard way. When we are near death then we remember the words of death by Alchol. Maybe by then it is to late. So we die like ever thing else. Who will remember us and say there he is. He died from Alchol. Who will rejoyce in our passing but our enemies. In our drinking we may have made enemies that we don't know. We dont dare ask for fear a punch in the nose. They say you can not train an old dog to learn new tricks. But it takes time to learn new ones, so we who are Alcholics have to learn not to drink and also learn how to say No! We have to learn over again and break the habit we have had. No matter how smart you are, Alchol does not make any difference who you are. Color, race, religion does not matter to Alchol. If it gets hold of you you are an Alcholic. I know you could say, it count happen to me. No sir not me. But you would be amazed to know how many there are in the Alchol deal. So do not laugh at what I say. I know I am right as I am an Alchol c and I will be one for as long as I live. We Alcholics are fighting a losing battle and that means it is our lives or the bottle. If we continue to drink we sure will lose but if we stop we may win and live a little longer, maybe to be one hundred. Who knows how long we would live if we stoped drinking. Think of that. The road of Alcholism leads you on the road to self destruction not only to your seifs but also to your loved ones. I do not know how many times I have fallen in love only to find my self alone because of my drinking. This is what has kept me from marrying. I know I could not afford to do this as I had to keep my self in booze. The supply as we called it. This was most important to us as we needed it some times during the night. This is an Alcholic. Now I had to give up some of my old friends even those who I didnt want to give up but thats the way to stay sober. My soberity is the way I will stay sober. If I continue working my soberity as I have. I have also found out to stay sober is to look at your self most of the time. What I have learned I put to my soberity and it works. Each one of us have our ways of working our soberity the way we know it will work for us. How you may work yours may not work for me. What I use may not work for you. We find what works best for us. Remember, either you give up drinking or not, that depends on you and no one else. Wilson J. Taveapont Indian Recovery Center Salt Lake City, Utah Regulations for recall petitions and elections are also outlined in the ordinance. Copies of the ordinance are posted in the tribal offices. Its an ideal situation. Thank you. If I may I would like to submit an article from the brotherhood at least once a month. These articles would not only promote our group but also tin exoffender group now orginating there. These groups have fine people to help coordinate but it strongely needs as the promotion and recognition-y- ou editor of the Bulletin can furnish both. The new developing group is the first of its kind on any Indian reservation. Once organized properly, the group can operate at any level. For instance working with the youths, the alcoholism program, communities, inhabitants of jails; eventually into the judicial system, probation and juvenile depts., jr. and sr. high schools, colleges and universities, civic groups, name it it can be useful.
