The event attracted not only statewide press coverage and three television stations, but a newsman who flew in from Japan to cover the demonstration for three major Japanese newspapers. Unveiled by Billings Energy Research Corporation (OTC 6.625, 7.00) of Provo, Utah, the prototype model utilizes the metal hydride technique developed by Billings engineers. The hydrogen engine is billed as a completely pollution-free combustion process, producing only water vapor as a by-produ- The ct. 20-passen- bus will operate over a loop connecting the neighboring cities of Provo and Orem. The Hydrogen Bus Project is jointly sponsored by Billings Energy Research, the Four Comers Regional Commission and the two cities. Billings obtained a grant for $52,000 from the Four Corners Commission, and approximately $10,000 from Provo and Orem. The corporation, itself, contributed $50,000 to the project. During the first year of operation the bus will operate intermittently while data is 13-mil- ;? collected regarding performance, durability, and economic feasibility of the project Pending additional funding, the project will then be expanded to include a complete fleet of 14 buses. Fuel for the bus is presently obtained from a Salt Lake supplier; however, company president Roger E. Billings said once their electrolyzer is developed to such a point to make it economically feasible, the company will generate its own hydrogen from water. Land Purchase Also announced by Billings at the ceremony was the purchase of 388 acres of land from Brigham Young University for an undisclosed sum. The company plans to develop the property into an industrial park over the next several years.'said BrnmRnmetiy the Ironton Steel Plant, the property was donated several years ago to the University by U.S. Steel. Billings Energy Research will also soon commence conversion of another bus to be used in the Riverside, Calif, area.
