The triennial meeting focussed on a program for action for the next three year period dealing particularly with the role of the YWCA as a womens movement that is concerned with the elimination of racism. Empowerment of women, youth and Third World people were all targets along with the areas of environment, economic and social justice and world relations. Joy Hashimoto of the Salt Lake City YWCA has been elected to the YWCA National Board at the March convention in San Diego. She will act as the laison from the Western Region of the U.S. to the National Staff. Ms. Hashimoto became active with the YWCA at about 12 the chairyears of age and has remained so. She has served woman of the Program Development and Community Committee, organized and carried out workshops on community problems in the local association on the Imperative, working with other organizations and agencies local and state. In addition she has served in executive capacity on community boards, developing new programs and making changes to meet the needs of the organization and community. i Out-Rea- ch Purpose of the YWCA The YWCA seeks to respond to the barrier-breakin- g love of God in this day. The association draws together into responsible membership women and girls of diverse experiences and faiths, that their lives may be open to new understandings and deeper relationships; and that together they may join in the struggle for peace and justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The YWCA offers a place and time for relaxation and fun; new friends, of the same age and of different age groups, with common interests of varied experineces; a climate for acquisition of knowledge or a skill; involvement, responsibility, and a way in which to serve. self-expressi-on, Attending as visiting delegates were: Peggy Crawford, Velma Crawford, Lucille Dustin, Ann Frangos, Barbara Forsgren, Joy Hashimoto, Nancy Hekking, Alberta Henry, Claudia Khkoff, Margo Lopez, Kay Melis, Joan Pitts, Nina Trusty, Merlyn Richards, Bonnie Rogers, Beatrice Wilkins and Laura Birkhaus. Delegates returned back to Salt Lake City this year with ideas on how to integrate themselves and the YW goals into society through meetings, with other groups, through schools, churches and various national institutions. They plan to become more politically active, lobbying where possible, to educate their own members, work through media and art, conduct workshops and become involved in other groups social action projects. Though racism is still the primary target of the YWCA, the convention also passed the following resolutions: To work for the independence of the elderly. Support for the confidentiality of news sources as an essential tool of a free press. Support for the continuing role of the Public Broadcasting Service in program planning without threat of censorship... by a politically appointed body. abortions to Support for efforts to provide safe, low-co- st all women who desire them. Use of federal highway monies for the establishment of a mass transit system. Support for ecological recycling programs. Support of American Indians in an effort to achieve tribal owned resources. Other studies of the delegates took them into the area of drug reform and amnesty. MEMBERS OF THE YWCA The YWCA is the largest international membership organization of women and girls which provides both services and programs 2,225,000 in the U.S A 3,300,000 around the world in 80 countries. Its mosaic of faces, faiths, cultures, ages, voices, shapes and sizes, dress, hopes, accomplishments, skills and needs. As a part of a national and world Christian movement, the YWCA is open to all economic, racial, occupational, religious, cultural backgrounds and age groups. It includes among its 2300 members in Salt Lake City those from many Christian backgrounds, those of other faiths; and those who profess no religions faith at all. Japan, was named second runnerup. She is a recent graduate of BYU, where she was homecoming queen last year. something that requires effort thought and concentration. Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways, I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out. I will do at least two things I dont want to do, as William James suggests, just for exercise. Just for today I will be with anything anyone. Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. In this half hour 1 will think of God, so as to get a little more perspective to my life. Ibis assumes that what Abraham Lincoln said is true that most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. Happiness is from within, it is not a matter of externals. Just for today I will try to adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my family, my business and my luck as they came 'and fit myself to them. Just for today I will take care of my body. I will exercise it, care for' it, nourish it, not abuse it nor neglect it, so that it will be a perfect machine for my bidding. Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read and not try to regulate nor improve state in the Miss USA Pageant May Just for today I will try to live at all, nor find fault 23.
